Cole Nye Returns to Bishop McDevitt – Andrew Wert to Central Dauphin

District 3’s Mid-Penn Division will be getting a shake up for the 2016 Season.

The first is Harrison “Cole” Nye who will return to Class AA program Bishop McDevitt after spending his sophomore season at Wyoming Seminary. While the education and wrestling advantages are invaluable at the prominent Wyoming Seminary in the end Cole wanted to be a little closer to family in the Harrisburg region.

Prior to high school Cole Nye was ranked #5 in the prestigious “Top Incoming Freshmen” of 2014 by PA Power Wrestling. As a rookie competing for Bishop McDevitt Cole bumped up from 195 lbs. to 220 lbs. for the post-season where he was one win shy of qualifying for the PIAA State Tournament. Nye was also a District 3 Runner-up and finished the season with a (27-11) record.

After transferring to Wyoming Seminary in 2014 the sophomore competed in one of the toughest schedules in the Nation. Nye competed at 220 lbs. where he captured a PAISWT Championship qualifying for the National Prep Championship. At the National Prep Championship Cole recorded a (4-3) record finishing in sixth place. In his return to Bishop McDevitt Nye will likely return to 220 lbs. and will be a favorite to land on the PIAA State Medal stand in Class AA.

The second wrestler making a change is Andrew “Gregg” Wert who was a PIAA State Fifth Place Medalist as a freshman for District 3’s Trinity. Originally from Mifflin County Wert moved to the Harrisburg region and attended Trinity during his freshman season. The rookie was highly respected in the Youth circuit and he did not disappoint in his first season competing in the PIAA.

Wrestling at 120 lbs, Andrew fell in the District 3 Section 2 Tournament finals to State Runner-up John Pipa (Bishop McDevitt) by major decision (9-0). The following week Wert was able to turn the tables on Pipa and captured his first District 3 Championship with a (6-4) win in the finals. The pair faced off for the third straight week in the South East Regional Finals where Pipa rebounded with a (1-0) win. In his first PIAA State Championship Wert got a tough draw in he first round meeting fellow Top Incoming Freshman Justin McCoy (Chestnut Ridge).

When the dust settled Wert fell to McCoy (5-2). Despite his opening round defeat Wert rallied back with three straight wins in the consolation round. After falling to Taylor Ortz (Brookville Area) in the consolation semifinals (3-1 OT) Wert again met Justin McCoy. This time around Wert came out on top in tiebreaker (3-2 TB) to finish his rookie season fifth in the State at 120 lbs.

The sophomore will be joining a Central Dauphin Rams program that has been one of the top teams in the State for the past nearly ten years. Bumping up from Class AA to Class AAA should not be difficult for Wert who will again be a favorite to earn a spot on the medal stand. Wert will add to an already impressive Central Dauphin line-up and predicts to compete at 132 lbs. for the Rams.
