Gavin Teasdale Wins Pan American Junior Freestyle Championship in Cuba

DSC_0004Undefeated 2015 PIAA State Champion Gavin Teasdale (Jefferson Morgan) earned one of the highest achievements of his young career. Making a trip all the way to Havana, Cuba the PA Wrestling star took on the best wrestlers in the Pan American Region at 50 kg/110 lbs.

Competing in Freestyle Gavin entered seeded fifth at 50 kg. In the Qualification round Gavin faced fourth seed Samuel Alva Pedragas of Peru and earned a come from behind victory (8-7 – PP). In the semifinals Gavin rolled to a technical fall (12-2 – VT) hitting a slick fireman’s and putting seventh seed Jesus Alejander Garcias (Mexico) on his back. In the Championship finals he faced the third seed Yadisney Portales Segura of Cuba. Teasdale was able to spoil the hometown favorites bid for the Championship earning a (5-5 – PP) decision. Having scored last Gavin was crowned Champion of the 50 kg weight class.

Two other Pennsylvania Natives competed in Cuba as Wyoming Seminary juniors Chris Weiler and Michael Rogers took to the mats for USA. Weiler, a National Prep Champion, was the #1 seed at 84 kg/185 lbs. and advanced into the finals with two wins by fall. In the finals 5th seed Lazaro Hernandez Luis of Cuba won by “Great Superiority” over Weiler picking up a (1o-0 – ST) win.

Weiler’s Wyoming Seminary teammate Michael Rogers, a National Prep Champion, competed at 120 kg/264 lbs. and also finished as the Pan American runner-up. Rogers, a former Penns Valley Area wrestler, picked up three straight victories but fell to Juan Carlos Mason Solorsano of Cuba in the finals. Solorsano had a dominating tournament wining three times by “Great Superiority” including a (10-0 – ST) over Rogers in just (1:08).
