Holiday Tournament Updates and Results

Pennsylvania wrestlers are taking advantage of a Holiday Gift of the 2 lbs. allowance which has allowed many of the State’s top wrestlers to drop weight classes. Below is a look at the Tournaments taking place and coming up. Click the below links for brackets/information on each Tournament.

Bethlehem Hurricane Holiday Classic

Highlights: Super sophomore Riley Palmer (Council Rock South) is undefeated this season and has dropped from 113 lbs. to 106 lbs. Joining Palmer making the drop is PIAA State Medalist Luke Werner (Bethlehem Liberty). Freshman Sammy Sasso (Nazareth Area) met State Ranked #2 Zach Trampe (Council Rock South) in the second round and in a close match Trampe came out on top (7-6). At 120 lbs. Tyshawn White (Central Dauphin), ranked #2 in the State, needed tiebreaker to get past Quakertown sophomore Harrison Campbell (7-6 TB). He now faces KJ Fenstermacher in the semifinals who is ranked #9 in the State. At 126 lbs. Zach Trampe (Council Rock South) held up his #2 State ranking by taking down fellow PIAA State Qualifier Jimmy Hoffman (Hazelton Area) who is ranked #10 in the State. On the other half of 126 lbs. Luke Gardner (Pottsville Area) made the drop from 132 lbs. where he was ranked #10 in the State and will take on Bethlehem Freedom’s Jonah Zych in the semifinals. At 132 lbs. Saucon Valley freshman Jason Jones will meet Northampton Area’s Todd Hetrick, ranked #12 in the State, in the semifinals. In the quarterfinals Hetrick took down freshman Josh Stillings (Pennridge) who is ranked #14 in the State by a score of (5-2). Central Dauphin senior Zach Elvin ranked #3 in the State advanced into the semifinals with a (8-2) win over Nazareth’s Brock Wilson. At 170 lbs. Cody Cordes (Wyoming Valley West), ranked #6 in the State, will take on former PIAA State Medalist Jake Young (Bethlehem Freedom), ranked #12 at 182 lbs., in the semifinals. At 182 lbs. another pair of ranked PA wrestlers will meet as John Jackobsen (Stroudsburg), ranked #3 in the State takes on Connor Frey (Lehighton Area), ranked #7 in the State. Jackobsen is undefeated and coming off a KOM Championship two weeks ago. Nazareth Area senior Walter Ortiz made waves knocking-off the #1 seed in the second round and advanced into the semifinals where he will take on Andrew Gunning (Bethlehem Liberty), ranked #13 in the State.

OJR winning the Team title. Tim McCall (Father Judge) ranked #4 in the State won the championship over freshman Brady Serina (Mechanicsburg Area). At 113 lbs. sophomore Austin DeSanto (Exeter Township) dropped from 126 lbs., where he was ranked #16 in the State, to 113 lbs. and captured the Buckskin Championship with a (3-2) win over Jose Morales (Conestoga Valley) who dropped from 120 lbs. where he was ranked #14 in the State. Ryan Resnick, ranked #17 in the State at 113 lbs., finished in third place after falling to Morales by fall in the semifinals. In a battle of two PIAA State Medalists junior Brett Kulp (Exeter Township), ranked #7 in the State, upended Derek Gulotta (Owen J. Roberts) who entered one better at #6 in the State. Kulp squeaked by (3-2 TB) to win the Championship title. State Qualifier Zurich Storm (New Oxford), ranked #10 in the State, finished in third place.

Colin Glorioso (Huntingdon Area), ranked #3 in the State, dominated the Tournament picking up three falls and a major decision including a fall in the finals over Father Judge sophomore Trevor Elfvin. In the semifinals Elfvin defeated #25 State ranked wrestler Luke Leathers (2-0). At 132 lbs. sophomore Brock Port (Bellefonte Area) ranked #3 in the State won the Buckskin Championship picking up several tough decisions over State ranked wrestlers. In the finals Port downed #19 Ian Moritz (Fox Chapel Area) score (3-2). Exeter Township sophomore dropped from 138 lbs. to 132 lbs. and finished in third place. At 138 lbs. Demetri D’Orsaneo (Owen J. Roberts) showed why he is ranked #5 in the State picking up three major decisions including a (15-7) win in the finals over Dan Ritz (Crestwood). Father Judge senior Kyle Mallon finished in third place over a few State ranked wrestlers. Jonathan Ross (Northern York), entered ranked #14 in the State at 152 lbs. but dropped to 145 lbs. and won the Championship title with relative ease.

One of the top finals matches came at 152 lbs. when sophomore Lucas Ortiz (Conestoga Valley), ranked #10 in the State, met fellow sophomore Jacob Oliver (Huntingdon Area), a PIAA State Medalist last season. Oliver was ranked #3 in the State at 160 lbs. before dropping to 152 lbs. Oliver was victorious (7-5 OT). In the semifinals Ortiz defeated Trevor Corl (Bellefonte Area), ranked #5 in the State, by score of (3-2). Corl is coming off an impressive Championship at the KOM. At 160 lbs. Keaton Eidle (Wilson) won a thin weight-class that did not feature any State ranked wrestlers. At 170 lbs. the #1 State ranked wrestler Idris White (Father Judge) took care of business picking up four falls and crushing the competition. In the finals he defeated Adam Brown (Wilson), ranked #19 in the State, by fall in a mere 0:22 seconds.

The first non-PA wrestler to win the Buckskin Championship came at 182 lbs. when Westfield, VA wrestler Jay Aiello defeated Penncrest sneior Joe Pyfer in the finals (6-3). At 195 lbs. Xavier Ferrizzi (Owen J. Roberts) entered ranked #15 in the State and captured the Championship picking up two falls, a forfeit, and a decision. At 220 lbs. Jake Vaxmonsky (Pittston Area), ranked #14 in the State, held off junior Matt Vines (Northern Lebanon) who is an honorable mention in the State. Vaxmonsky won in sudden victory (10-5 OT) to claim the Championship. The #2 ranked wrestler in the State at heavyweight, Ryan Monk (Dallas) a PIAA State Medalist, defeated Westfield, VA senior Austin Knies (3-2). New Oxford’s Brock Hartman bounced back from a semifinal defeat to Monk (7-3) to finish in third place.

 

Tony Iasiello Christmas City Tournament

Host Bethlehem Catholic leads a small contingent of talented teams at the annual Tony Iasiello Christmas City Tournament. BECA advanced 7 wrestlers into the finals and came away with 7 Champions. After claiming both 106 lbs. and 113 lbs. PIAA State Champion Jake Reigel (Bethlehem Catholic), ranked #4 in the State, downed PIAA State Medalist Dylan Steffenino (Upper Perkiomen), ranked #8 in the State, with a (3-2) decision. One of the Tournaments most impressive performances came when Scranton’s Rui Evanitsky, ranked #11 in the State, defeated returning PIAA State runner-up Josh Girogio (Schuylkill Valley), ranked #2 in the State, with a (8-4) decision in the semifinals. Evanitsky went on to win the Championship over The Hill School’s Kyle Gorant (8-4), formerly of Southern Lehigh High School. Girogio went on to finish in third place defeating Chad Heagele (Archbishop Wood), ranked #9 in the State, in the consolation finals. At 145 lbs. Wallenpaupack’s Chase Gallik, ranked #19 in the State at 152 lbs., had a solid performance down a weight class winning the Championship over freshman Tyler DeLorenzo (East Stroudsburg Area South) in the finals (7-2). The unranked freshman DeLorenzo had a solid win over Cole Karam (Bethlehem Catholic), ranked #18 in the State, by a score of (10-6) in the semifinals. Karam bounced back to finish in third place. At 182 lbs. Jared Wehrmann, ranked #6 in the State, remained undefeated on the season capturing the Championship over Jayden Reyes (Louis E. Dieruff), who is ranked #17 in the State at 170 lbs.

Trojan Wars @ Chambersburg Area

Final results are posted. Freshman Jaret Lane (Southern Columbia Area) won  the 106 lbs. bracket. At 113 lbs. Aaron Rump (Chambersburg Area) won the Championship fighting off a tough (3-0) match against freshman Cameron Delucia (James Buchanan) in the first round. Nolan Link (Penn Cambria), a PIAA State Qualifier in 2014, finished in third place downing Delucia (4-2) in the consolation semifinals. Senior Coy Campbell (Upper Dauphin) ranked #6 in the State finished as the runner-up. At 126 lbs. Jacob Wasser (Palisades) ranked #9 in the State won the Championship by forfeit over PIAA State runner-up John Pipa (Bishop McDevitt). Bishop McDevitt senior David Pipa, ranked #7 in the State at 126 lbs. won the Championship at 132 lbs. over junior Lucas Shaff (Emmaus) who is ranked #21 in the State. At 138 lbs. Chambersburg Area junior Garrett Kyner, ranked #8 in that State, captured the Championship over Tyler Marsh (Palisades). At 145 lbs. the Tournament’s two best wrestlers met in the semifinals when the #1 State ranked wrestler Kent Lane (Southern Columbia Area) defeated David Rump (Chambersburg Area) ranked #6 in the State by a score of (2-1). Lane would go on to win the Tournament while Rump dominated his way to third place. Southern Columbia Area claimed their third Championship when PIAA State Runner-up Bill Barnes, ranked #2 in  the State at 160 lbs., won by major decision in the finals. Barnes recently made the drop from 160 lbs. to 152 lbs. where he most likely will overtake the #1 spot next week. Lower Dauphin’s Bailey Shutt entered the Tournament ranked #18 in that State at 160 lbs. but fell to Emmaus senior Cole Franklin, a former PIAA State Qualifier, in the finals (3-2). Two District 3 wrestlers took to the mat with Drew Peck (Chambersburg Area) ranked #11 in the State going against Cevon Nguyen (Central Dauphin East) ranked #23 in that State. Peck out wrestled Nguyen with a (6-1) decision. At 182 lbs. returning PIAA State Medalist Casey Glunt (James Buchanan) entered ranked #3 in the State at 195 lbs. but dropped to 182 lbs. and dropped the competition picking up two falls, a technical fall, and a major decision in the finals. Another State Ranked wrestler dropped as Thomas Alcaro (Emmaus) entered ranked #11 in the State at 220 lbs. dropped to 195 lbs. where he finished as the runner-up. At 220 lbs. Daniel Salinas (Saint Marys Area) made his season debut and won the Trojan War Championship. Donegal senior Matthew Yodder finished as the runner-up at 285 lbs.

 

Manheim Holiday Tournament

The 45th Annual Tournament will take place and feature: Bald Eagle Area, Council Rock North, Easton Area, Garnet Valley, J.W. Robinson, VA, Kiski Area, LaSalle College, Manheim Central, Methacton, North Allegheny, Shikellamy, Solanco, Spring-Ford, State College Area.

 

Ralph Wetzel Classic Tournament @ Hatboro-Horsham

Tournament begins Monday December 29th.  Participating Teams: Abington, Archbishop Carroll, Bensalem, Cedar Crest, Central Bucks East, Central Bucks South, Central Bucks West, Central High, Cheltenham, Chichester, Downingtown East, Ephrata, Germantown Academy, Hatboro Horsham, Haverford High, Lower Merion, Norristown, Northeast High, Pennsbury, Perkiomen Valley, Phelps School, Pottsgrove, Radnor, Roman Catholic, St. Joseph’s Prep, Unionville, Upper Dublin, Upper Moreland, West Chester East

 

Tunkhannock Kiwanis Tournament

Coughlin, Lackawanna Trail, Lake Lehman, Mahanoy, Montrose, Mount Carmel, Mountain View, Northeast Bradford, Sayre, Scranton Prep, Tunkhannock, Valley View, Western Wayne, Wyalusing, Wyoming Area.
