How The Top Incoming Freshmen of 2014 Faired

The 2014 Season was packed full of rookie talent in both PIAA Classes and this is a look back at the “Top Incoming Freshmen of 2014” and how they faired. A total of 15 freshmen brought home PIAA State Medals. Three (3) Pennsylvania freshmen won a PIAA State Championship in 2014; #1 Spencer Lee (Franklin Regional) at 113 lbs., #2 Cameron Coy (Penn Trafford) at 132 lbs., and #19 Jake Riegel (Bethlehem Catholic) at 106 lbs. All 15 of the PIAA Medalists from 2014 were featured in the “Top Incoming Freshmen” series.

As expected, several freshmen were left off the list but had rookie seasons that would certainly earn them a spot among the Top Incoming Freshmen. A list of those overlooked freshmen who I missed are listed below.

Looking back at the 2014 Season this is how I would rank the top 10 freshmen of 2014 – followed by the Top Incoming Freshmen of 2014 and their actual results.

1.  Spencer Lee

Actual 2014 Finish:  PIAA Class AAA State Champion at 113 lbs. (49-0 Season Record)

Spencer Lee was no doubt the most impressive freshman to grace Pennsylvania wrestling mat this season – tearing through the top wrestlers in dominating fashion. Lee went undefeated in his freshman season capturing a PIAA Class AAA State Championship at 113 lbs. Lee helped lead Franklin Regional to a PIAA State Dual Team and Individual Championship. He began the season by winning the toughest in-season tournament in the Nation at the Walsh Ironman and captured the “Outstanding Wrestler Award.” He followed that up with a POWERade Championship and WPIAL Section/Regional titles. In his 49 victories this past season Spencer Lee scored bonus points in an astonishing 48 matches. His closest match was a (9-5) decision over Ethan McCoy (Greater Latrobe) who he later defeated multiple times by tech-fall. Lee ended the season ranked #1 in the Nation at 113 lbs. by both Flo and Intermat.

 

2.  Cameron Coy

High School:  Penn Trafford

Actual 2014 Finish:  PIAA Class AAA State Champion at 132 lbs. (39-5 Season Record)

Cameron Coy was a solid second behind Spencer Lee winning the 132 lbs. Class AAA PIAA State Championship in a loaded weight. Coy began his freshman campaign by winning the Eastern Area Invitational and followed it up with a runner-up finish at the King of the Mountain Tournament. In the finals Coy lost to 2013 PIAA State Champion Sam Krivus (Hempfield Area) score (1-0). In total three of his five defeats on the season came at the hand of Sam Krivus. Coy finished in third place at 132 lbs. in both the POWERade Tournament and the Westmoreland County Coaches Association Tournament. In the post-season Coy fell in the WPIAL Section I finals to 2013 PIAA State Champion Tyler Smith (Franklin Regional) score (2-1). The two would again meet in the finals a week later as Coy stunned the returning State Champion with an impressive (5-2) decision to capture his first WPIAL/Southwest Regional Championship. Entering his first PIAA Class AAA State Championships Cameron was nothing short of impressive capturing the PIAA State Championship at 132 lbs. with a (2-1) win over Nazareth Area senior Chase Zemenak in the finals.

 

3.  Jarod Verkleeren

High School:  Belle Vernon Area

Class:  AAA

District:  7

Region:  Southwest

Jarod got a late start on the season sitting out the first month with a shoulder injury. The freshman got right to work when he made his debut for Belle Vernon Area finishing as the runner-up at 145 lbs. in the Westmoreland County Coaches Association Tournament. Verkleeren punched his ticket to Hershey by finishing in third place in the WPIAL/Southwest Regional Tournament with a (2-1 TB) win over Central Catholic’s Tony Palumbo in the consolation finals. Verkleeren fell just one win shy of earning a PIAA State Medal going (1-2) in Hershey.

 

4.  Gus Solomon

High School:  Franklin Regional

Class:  AAA

District:  7

Actual 2014 Finish: WPIAL Tournament Qualifier at 120 lbs. (11-6 Season Record)

Gus Solomon was a talented freshman who was surrounded by talent. Undersized at 120 lbs. Solomon missed most of the season with various injuries including a finger infection. While in the line-up Gus was impressive against the State’s top competition. Two of his six defeats on the season came at the hands of PIAA State Champion Luke Pletcher (Greater Latrobe) by scores of (1-0) and (2-1). Solomon was able to ride-out Pletcher for an entire period in a (1-0) defeat during the PIAA State Dual Team Championships. At the Westmoreland County Coaches Association Tournament Solomon finished in fourth place – falling twice to Kiski Prep’s Justin Patrick. In the post-season Solomon finished third at the WPIAL Section I Tournament at 120 lbs. but was unable to compete in the WPIAL Tournament due to an injury.

 

5.  Cole Nye

High School:  Bishop McDevitt

Class:  AA

District:  3

Actual 2014 Finish:  Southeast Regional Tournament Sixth Place (27-11 Season Record)

Bishop McDevitt freshman Cole Nye bumped up from 195 lbs. to 220 lbs. in the post-season where he finished one win shy of earning a spot in Hershey at the PIAA State Tournament. Nye won the District 3 Section II Championship at 220 lbs. Throughout the season Nye participated in a tough Bishop McDevitt schedule coming close to medaling at the POWERade and Escape the Rock Tournaments. 

 

6.  Zane Black

High School:  Bishop McDevitt

Class:  AA

District:  3

Actual 2014 Finish:  PIAA Class AA State Qualifier at 170 lbs. (30-7 Season Record)

170 lbs. freshman Zane Black earned a trip to Hershey in his first season with a third place finish in the Southeast Regional Tournament. Black was a District 3 Section 2 Champion and a District 3 Tournament runner-up at 170 lbs. At the PIAA State Tournament Black won his first match but fell to eventual PIAA State Champion Evan Delong (Kane Area) in the quarterfinals (13-6). In his first consolation bout Black dropped a tight (4-3) match to Franklin sophomore Dakota Geer to end his season. Like teammate Cole Nye, Zane Black held his own against a tough schedule just missing medals at the POWERade and Escape the Rock Tournaments.

 

7.  Jacob Oliver

High School:  Huntingdon Area

Class:  AA

District:  6

Huntingdon Area freshman Jacob Oliver saved the best for last as he capped his rookie season with a fourth place finish at the PIAA Class AA State Tournament. Competing at 145 lbs. Oliver won the District 6 Tournament and placed fourth at the Southwest Regional Tournament earning a spot in Hershey. In the first round of the State Tournament Oliver upset Northwest Regional Champion Levi Stoyer (Reynolds) in tiebreaker (9-8 TB). Oliver also captured Championships at the Conestoga Valley Buckskin Classic and Penn Cambria Tournament.

 

8.  Austin DeSanto

High School:  Exeter Township

Class:  AAA

District:  3

Actual 2014 Finish: South Central Regional Fifth Place at 113 lbs. (35-3 Season Record) 

Entering the post-season it seemed Exeter Township freshman Austin DeSanto was on a mission at 113 lbs. He entered the District 3/South Central Regional Tournament with only one defeat which was a medical forfeit. After winning the District 3 Section III Championship at 113 lbs. DeSanto was unable to qualify for his first career PIAA State Tournament as he finished in fifth place at 113 lbs.

 

9.  Brock Port

High School:  Bellefonte Area

Class:  AAA

District:  6

Region:  Northwest

Actual 2014 Finish:  PIAA Class AAA State Qualifier at 120 lbs. (32-6 Season Record)

Brock Port proved he is capable of having a consistent and successful career at Bellefonte Area High School. In his rookie season Port qualified for the PIAA State Tournament at 120 lbs. Brock was a North West Regional third place medalist and a District 6 Tournament Champion.

 

10.  Chandler Olson

High School:  Shippensburg Area

Class:  AAA

Actual 2014 Finish:  PIAA Class AAA State Eighth Place at 120 lbs. (32-7 Season Record)

Chandler Olson flew under the radar for most of the season but had an impressive final weeks of the post-season to end his freshman season with a PIAA Class AAA State Medal. Olson entered the District 3 Section 1 Tournament as the #1 seed but fell in the finals to fellow freshman #20 Cal Reichert (Cumberland Valley) score (5-1). Olson bounced back the following week at the South Central Regional Tournament earning two overtime victories to advance into the 120 lbs. finals and securing a spot at the PIAA State Tournament. At the PIAA State Tournament Chandler continued to impress winning his first match over senior Matt Marino (Garnet Valley) before falling to 2x PIAA State Champion Ethan Lizak (Parkland). In the consolations Olson successfully advanced into the medal round by defeating freshman #33 James Hoffman (Hazleton Area) score (2-1). Olson would finish the PIAA State Tournament as the eighth place finisher at 120 lbs.

 

11.  Zack Trampe
