Junior National Freestyle Champion Jordan Wood (Boyertown Area) and his parents.

Team Pennsylvania ended the Fargo Nationals on Saturday with two finalists, one Champion, and five All-Americans. The numbers were down from a season ago when Team PA had 12 medalists at the Junior Freestyle Nationals finishing second in team points. In 2014 Team PA had a ton of top level talent from the Class of 2015 participate including Vincenzo Joseph, Mike Kemerer, A.C. Headlee, Brock Zacherl and Josh Shields.

The first All-American and Junior National Finalist was Southern Columbia’s Jaret Lane at 100 lbs. The PIAA State Medalist became a Junior National Double All-American capturing the Greco-Roman Championship earlier in the week. At the Freestyle Nationals Jaret had a tough quarterfinal win over Nathan Rankin (Texas) winning (12-10) and advanced into the National Finals with a tech-fall and pin. In the finals Lane was out-matched by Arizona’s Jason Holmes who won by tech-fall (14-3).

The next Keystone State All-American did not come until 152 lbs. with Mifflin County’s Hayden Hidlay. The rising senior and N.C. State recruit won the Greco-Roman Junior National Championship earlier in the week. In Freestyle Hidlay was upset in the Championship round by California’s Evan Wick in the final moments (14-13). Hidlay rebounded in a serious way defeating in the consolation round Mason Manville (Virginia) score (7-0). Hidlay defeated the PSU recruit and Nationally acclaimed wrestler in the Greco-Roman finals where there was controversy after Hidlay was pushed by Manville at the conclusion. Hidlay followed up his Freestyle win over Manville with an impressive (12-2) tech-fall over Purdue recruit Griffin Parriott (Minnesota). Hayden had no issues earning the third place medal at 152 lbs. racking up a (9-1) Tournament record.

PIAA State Finalist John Jakobson (Stroudsburg) earned All-American honors for the second straight season in Fargo, ND. In 2014 Jakobson placed fourth at 182 lbs. in the Cadet Freestyle Nationals. This season, up a Division and weight-class, Jake battled to an All-American finish despite suffering a shoulder injury in the quarterfinals. After winning his first two matches Jakobson fell to eventual Champion Jacob Seely (Colorado) in the quarterfinals by tech-fall (12-1). The Lehigh recruit suffered a shoulder injury during the match but pushed onward winning in the blood round over Jon Teague (Iowa) to secure an All-American finish. Due to the injury, a possible separated shoulder, Jakobson injury defaulted in his next two matches to finish in eighth place.

The final two All-Americans from Pennsylvania came at 220 lbs. as Jordan Wood (Boyertown Area) captured the Junior Freestyle National Championship in dominating fashion. The 2015 PIAA State Champion and Lehigh recruit gave up only one point in six victories picking up a fall and five tech-falls en route to the Championship. Along the way Wood defeated fellow PA Wrestler Cole Nye (Bishop McDevitt) by tech-fall (10-0). In the finals Jordan continued his dominance winning by tech-fall over Minnesota’s Rylee Streifel (10-0). Rising junior Cole Nye was able to earn All-American honors for the second straight season in Fargo placing eighth at 220 lbs. In 2014 Nye was a Cadet Freestyle All-American at 220 lbs. finishing in fourth place.
