PA Shines at FloNationals Crowns Four Champions

The talent in the 2014 FloNationals was, as expected, deep in each weight-class. In total an impressive 27 Pennsylvania wrestlers captured top eight medals with four earning Championships. Highlights of the Tournament included eighth grade wrestler Sam Sasso (Nazareth Area) placing in fifth place by defeating 2x PIAA Medalist Gage Curry (North Hill) score (7-3); 2x PIAA State Champion Luke Pletcher (Greater Latrobe) being majored decision in the Championship finals at 120 lbs. by New York’s Nick Piccinnini (10-2); and junior Sam Krivus (Hempfield Area) avenging his defeat to Northampton Area’s Zach Valley to capture his second FloNationals Championship.

106 lbs.

The story at 106 lbs. was eighth grade wrestler Sam Sasso (Nazareth Area) who stormed into the Championship semifinals with an impressive (7-1) win over National ranked freshman Justin Mejia (California). Mejia entered the Tournament ranked #4 in the Nation by Intermat at 106 lbs. In the semifinals Sasso fell in tiebreaker (3-1 TB) to Illinois sophomore Rudy Yates who entered the Tournament ranked #16 in the Nation by Intermat at 113 lbs. Pennsylvania’s Gage Curry also advanced into the semifinals where he fell to eventual Champion and #1 Nationally ranked freshman at 106 lbs. by Intermat Yianni Diakomihalis (New York). Both Curry and Sasso dropped their next matches in the consolation round and met in the fifth place match. In the match Sasso pulled away from Curry in the third period to come at on top (7-3) to earn fifth place. Also earning a medal at 106 lbs. was Athens Area freshman Brian Courtney. The PIAA State third place medalist finished in eighth place defeating the third place medalist Lucas Hall (Michigan) in the Championship round. PIAA Class AA State runner-up John Pipa (Bishop McDevitt) fell one win shy from placing in the top 8.

PIAA State runner-up Joe Wheeling (General McLane) although registered did not compete. No PA wrestler made a series push to get onto the medal stand as junior Aaron Ehrgott (Meadville Area) advanced the furthest into the consolation sixth round. Malvern Prep sophomore Nick Lattanaze, who registered at 106 lbs., bumped up to 113 lbs. and defeated eighth grade wrestler Cole Matthews (Reynolds) score (4-3) in the consolation round.

2x PIAA State Champion and 2013 FloNationals Champion Luke Pletcher (Greater Latrobe) was unable to secure his second straight title falling hard to New York junior Nick Piccinnini in the finals (10-2). Pletcher entered the Tournament ranked as the #1 wrestler in the Nation at 120 lbs. by Intermat while Piccinnini was #4. Despite Pennsylvania missing out on a Champion, Derry Area sophomore George Phillippi had a solid Tournament finishing in fifth place. The 2013 PIAA State Champion also fell victim to Nick Piccinnini in the Championship quarterfinals (3-2) but bounced back to earn his second straight FloNationals medal. In the consolation round Phillippi defeated 2014 PIAA State runner-up and freshman Todd Lane (Southern Columbia Area) score (2-1). For his effort Lane was able to finish in eighth place in a loaded field of National competitors. One, two, three all went to Pennsylvania at 126 lbs. as junior Sam Krivus (Hempfield Area) made it two FloNational Championships in a row. In the finals Krivus met Northampton Area senior Zach Valley who handed Krivus a PIAA State semifinal defeat last month in tiebreaker to advance into the State Finals. This time around the 2013 PIAA State Champion came out on top withstanding Valley in a close (3-2) decision. Valley was no less impressive knocking off some of the Nation’s best en route to the FloNational finals including a (2-0) win over New York’s Travis Passaro, a Hofstra recruit who entered the Tournament ranked #13 in the Nation at 126 lbs. by Intermat. Waynesburg Central junior A.C. Headlee proved why he is considered one of the top wrestlers in the Nation at 126 lbs. with a dominating third place finish. The 2x PIAA State medalist three (3) falls, one (1) tech-fall, and two (2) major decisions en route to a third place finish. After falling in the Championship third round to Oklahoma’s Broken Arrow wrestler Davion Jeffries (9-2), Headlee avenged the defeat by pinning Jeffries in the consolation semifinals in the first period. Fellow WPIAL star Dom Forys (North Allegheny) was unable to earn a FloNationals medal going (3-2) in the Tournament.

Despite missing 2014 PIAA State runner-up Chase Zemenak, who registered but did not compete, Team Pennsylvania still walked away with two medalists at 132 lbs. North Allegheny senior Jesse Rodgers, who missed basically all of his senior season, returned to the mat and was nothing less than impressive. Rodgers advanced into the Championship quarterfinals where he fell in tiebreaker, but, won his next match in the consolation round to advance into the medal round at 132 lbs. In his next match Rodgers would win by medial forfeit over fellow Pennsylvania wrestler Kent Lane (Southern Columbia Area). Rodgers then injury defaulted his remaining matches  to finish in fifth place. Kent Lane, a 2014 PIAA State runner-up, would end up in eighth place but it was a hard fought finish nonetheless. In the consolation eighth round Lane downed Bethel Park freshman Nino Bonaccorsi (8-2). Others who made pushes were District 11 pair Jake Jones (Stroudsburg) and Mason Byrne (East Stroudsburg Area South).

PIAA State Champion Brock Zacherl (Brookville Area) proved his #5 National Ranking at 138 lbs. by Intermat is warranted by capturing his first FloNationals title. It was the third time Zacherl earned a FloNationals medal in his career. Zacherl used an overtime victory in the semifinals to advance into the finals where he was victorious (3-0). Sophomore Kaleb Young (Punxsutawney Area) continued his streak of success by finishing in seventh place at 138 lbs. Young fell to Zacherl (6-1) in the quarterfinals but bounced back and defeated his rival Hayden Hidlay (Mifflin County) score (5-2) in the consolation round. In the defeat Hidlay fell short of earning a top eight finish. Northern York sophomore Jonathan Ross also had an impressive Tournament falling one win shy of earning a spot on the medal stand. After winning his first match senior Colby Ems (East Stroudsburg Area South) was forced to injury default out of the tournament in his second round match. Undefeated PIAA State Champion Kyle Bova (Coudersport) won his first career State Championship last month at 160 lbs. and the Lock Haven recruit showed he can hang with the Nation’s top talent at FloNationals. Bova had an impressive win in the semifinals over Minnesota State Champion Dayton Racer (4-0) before meeting Louis Hernandez (New York) ranked #9 in the Nation at 152 lbs. by Intermat. In the finals Bova fell to the New York senior (5-4). Also falling victim to Hernandez was Cole Walter (Mifflinburg Area) who lost (11-4) in the semifinals. Walter, a 3x PIAA State medalist, rebounded to finish in fifth place at 152 lbs. PIAA State medalist Jimmy Miller (Brookville Area) defeated eighth grade wrestler Michael Beard (Malvern Prep) in the consolation round in overtime. Miller was one of three PIAA State Medalists who two wins shy of the medal round – joining Paul Dunn (Bethel Park) and Brendan Burnham (Pine-Richland).

2x PIAA State third place medalist Ryan Preisch (Milton Area) advanced into the semifinals but fell short of reaching the finals. The Lehigh recruit fell in tiebreaker in the consolation semifinals and injury defaulted in the fifth place match to finish in sixth place. Two more Keystone State wrestlers earned FloNational hardware as Central Catholic junior Tony Palumbo defeated fellow WPIAL wrestler Austin Bell (Belle Vernon Area) to earn seventh place with a (7-5) decision. Palumbo wrestled well past his credentials as the junior entered the off-season wit ha (43-21) career record and a Southwest Regional fourth place finish this season. Palumbo has been hit hard by injures in his career but made it clear that when healthy he is a top tier wrestler. Troy Area junior Nick Stephani has twice finished fourth at Northeast Regional Tournament and fell just one win shy of earning a FloNationals medal at 160 lbs.

A talented group of wrestlers were featured at 170 lbs. with three earning FloNationals medals. Undefeated PIAA State Champion Evan Delong (Kane Area) fell in the semifinals to eventual champion Josh Lopez (Maryland) who is the #10 ranked wrestler in the Nation by Intermat. Delong then won his next two matches to finish in third place. State runner-up junior Jared Walker (South Fayette) finished in seventh place and took down two fellow Pennsylvania wrestlers in the process. In the Championship round Walker defeated sophomore Garrett Hoffman (Montoursville Area) score (2-1). In the seventh place bout Walker met Franklin sophomore Dakota Geer who last month placed third at the PIAA State Tournament. Walker was again victorious (4-3) to place in seventh. Stroudsburg sophomore John Jakobsen had a (3-2) Tournament record falling to Pennsylvania wrestlers in his two defeats.

Pennsylvania won it’s third 2014 FloNationals Championship as DuBois senior Tom Sleigh captured the 195 lbs. title. Last season Sleigh finished in sixth place at the FloNationals competing at 170 lbs. This time around the 2x PIAA State third place medalist greatly improved by reaching the top of the podium at 195 lbs. Surprisingly Sleigh was the only PA medalist at 195 lbs. where a hand-full of talented wrestlers competed. Things could have been much different for PA as a total of three (3) wrestlers fell one win shy of the medal round. Freshman Cole Nye (Bishop McDevitt), sophomore Drew Phipps (Norwin), and junior Garrett Reinwald all went (2-2) for the Tournament and narrowly missed earning medals. Phipps, a PIAA State third place medalist, faced PIAA State qualifier Garrett Reinwald in the first round, winning a tight (3-2) match. In the consolation round Reinwald himself had an impressive victory getting past former PIAA State qualifier Matt Wagner (Delaware Valley) in overtime (3-1 SV).

Undefeated PIAA State Champion Mike “Freight-Train” Boykin showed the Nation what the hype is all about. Boykin continues to impress on the big stage after earning his first career PA State Championship last month for Coatsville Area High School. Boykin captured the 2014 FloNationals Championship in relatively smooth fashion earning two (2) first period falls followed by three wins for a total point margin of (29-10). PIAA State runner-up Reynold “Buzzy” Maines advanced into the Championship semifinals but had to settle for fifth place at 220 lbs. Also earning a spot on the medal stand was Emmaus junior Thomas Alcro who finished in eighth place. Alcro, a 2014 Northeast Regional fourth place medalist, downed fellow PA wrestler Ian Mallory (General McLane) to advance into the medal round (4-3). In addition to Mallory, Kittanning’s Jacob Robb and Cambridge Springs’ Zach Stafford fell just one win shy of advancing into the top 8.

At heavyweight Pennsylvania earned yet another medal making it 12 of 14 weights where a PA wrestler was on the medal stand. McDowell senior Scott Augustine, who will be taking his talents to American University next season, finished in fifth place. Augustine was the only Keystone State wrestler on the medal stand as Dallas junior Ryan Monk and Southmoreland sophomore Jake Beistel both fell one win short of the medal round.
