Belle Vernon Area sophomore Jarod Verkleeren captured his second straight Cadet National Freestyle Championship at 63 kg

A total of 20 Pennsylvania wrestlers made the trip to Akron, Ohio for the UWW Cadet Nationals. Last year the Keystone State earned five Cadet Medals – four of which were Cadet National Champions. All four of Pennsylvania’s Cadet National Champions from 2014 returned in 2015. This season Pennsylvania earned seven Cadet National Medals but only two of those were Cadet National Champions.

Included was Cadet World Champion Spencer Lee (Franklin Regional) who last season won Worlds at 50 kg/110 lbs. This season the 2x undefeated PIAA State Champion competed at 54 kg/119 lbs. and faced a much tougher National field. After an impressive (10-0 T-Fall) semifinal win over Austin Gomez (Illinois), the #3 ranked wrestler in the Nation by Flo at 120 lbs., Spencer Lee met Oklahoma’s Daton Fix in the best-of-three series. Fix, a sophomore, was the Cadet National Champion last year at 54 kg and competed at the Cadet World Championships where he went (1-1).

In the first match of the finals Spencer Lee stormed out to a (5-0) advantage but Fix responded in the second period scoring 5 unanswered points to claim the first match (5-5). On the brink of elimination Lee needed a win over Fix to force a third and final match. In the first period Lee again jumped out (4-0) over Fix. In the second period a wild turn of events ensued and Daton Fix put up 9 points to go ahead (9-4) on Lee with under a minute left. Lee cut the deficit to (9-6) but it wasn’t enough as Daton Fix secured arguably the most impressive win of his young career. For Spencer Lee it was his first defeat in an officiated match since April 7, 2013 when, as an eighth grader, he fell to Luke Pletcher (Greater Latrobe) in the FloNational Finals (3-1).

Boyertown Area junior Jordan Wood captured a Cadet National Championship last season and went on to finish as the World Runner-up at 100 kg/220 lbs. In 2015, however, the World Silver Medalist was upset in the semifinals of the Cadet National Championship. Wood, ranked #1 in the Nation by both Flo and Intermat, was defeated by Minnesota freshman Gable Steveson (Apple Valley) in the semifinals (8-1). Gable was a Minnesota State Champion as a freshman and his older brother Bobby is a senior who is ranked #2 in the Nation by Intermat and will be attending Minnesota next season. Gable, ranked #3 in the Nation by Flo, went on to capture the Cadet National Championship in the finals. Jordan Wood finished in third place defeating fellow PA grappler Anthony Piscopo (LaSalle College) in the consolation finals. Wood, a Lehigh recruit, will still be competing in the World Championships as he won the Greco Cadet National Championship at 100 kg/220 lbs.

The first Cadet National Champion from Pennsylvania came at 50 kg/110 lbs. when undefeated PIAA State Champion Gavin Teasdale swept the best-of-three finals over Drew Mattin (Ohio). Teasdale, a 2015 Pan-Am Champion, took the first match (4-1) and the second (4-2). It was the second straight Cadet National Championship for Teasdale as he qualifies for the Cadet World Championships. A season ago Teasdale placed fifth at Worlds going (2-2).

Also repeating as Cadet National Champion was Belle Vernon Area sophomore Jarod Verkleeren. The PIAA State Medalist defended his 2014 Cadet National Championship at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. with a decisive win in the finals. Verkleeren earned a tight (9-6) win in the first finals match over Kevin Storr of Michigan but swept the finals with a tech-fall (11-0) in match #2. For the second year Verkleeren will compete in the Cadet World Championships as he went (0-1) last season.
