Renda Wins FILA Junior Nationals as 9 PA Wrestlers Earn Medals

Former Brandywine Heights Area wrestler Peter Renda captured the FILA Junior National Championship at 79 KG / 174 lbs. Renda just completed his true-freshman year for the North Carolina State Wolfpack where he earned an NCAA National Tournament qualification at 174 lbs. and ended the season with a (27-13) record. Renda won the FILA Junior National title in strong fashion winning all five of his matches by technical-fall outscoring his opponents (54-2). Renda was just one of nine Pennsylvania Natives who earned FILA Junior National medals in Freestyle.

Recent PIAA State Champion Dalton Macri (Canon-McMillan) continued his impressive streak of quality wins as he finished in third place at 55 KG / 121.25 lbs. Macri will be heading to Cornell next season and could prove to be a key competent for Big Red head coach Rob Koll in the near future.

Coming off one of the top NCAA true-freshman campaigns in the Nation, Penn State’s Zain Retherford returned to the mats at the FILA Junior Nationals. The NCAA Third Place All-American advanced into the finals of 66 KG / 145.5 lbs. where he faced arguably the best high school freestlye wrestler in the Nation, Aaron Pico of California. Retherford was unable to generate any points in a (7-0) defeat to Pico. Two other Penn State Nittany Lions earned FILA Junior National medals with former PIAA State Champions Garrett Hammond (Chambersburg Area) placed eighth at 74 KG / 163 lbs. and Cody Law (Forest Hills) finished in eighth at 70 KG / 154.25 lbs.

Former Muncy star and current Columbia University wrestler Troy Hembury had an impressive fourth place finish at 96 KG / 211.5 lbs. Pennsylvania picked up two more medals at 120 KG / 264.5 lbs. as Dover, PA native Brooks Black (Blair Academy) finished in fifth place while Princeton wrestler Raymond O’Donnell (Saucon Valley) placed eighth.
