Rumor Mill: Marshall Peppelman to Lehigh? Plus More!

Screen Shot 2014-09-21 at 1.22.51 AMThe off-season is coming to an end but the rumors are still heating up across Pennsylvania.

One of the more intriguing rumors of the off-season is former 3x PIAA State Champion Marshall Peppelman returning to PA for the Lehigh Mountain Hawks. Marshall is the second oldest Peppelman brother and spent the last four seasons in Ithaca, New York competing for the Cornell Big Red wrestling team. Peppelman, who graduated from Cornell last spring, amassed a (67-37) career record for the Big Red and qualified for the NCAA National Tournament in 2012.

Marshall was one of the Nation’s top high school wrestlers of the 2010 Class and ended his career at Central Dauphin with a (173-7) record. According to several sources Peppelman has applied to Lehigh’s graduate school and plans to use his fifth year of eligibility competing for the Mountain Hawks this season. Peppelman could add to an already impressive Lehigh line-up projecting to compete at 165 lbs. or 174 lbs.

Other changes for Pennsylvania wrestlers in the NCAA include former North Star wrestler Nick Roberts transferring from Ohio State to Pittsburgh. Roberts, who started the entire 2013-2014 seasons for the Buckeyes, would be competing against redshirt freshman Nathan Tomasello for the spot at 125 lbs. The former 3x PIAA State Champion was impressive in his redshirt freshman season placing sixth at the Big Ten Championships and qualifying for the NCAA National Tournament. Roberts could add some serious strength to the Pitt Panther lower-weights. In May 2014 it was announced former PIAA State Champion Godwin Nyama-Cutler (Brashear High School) transferred from Pittsburgh to Grand Canyon University where he projects to compete at 125 lbs.

Another big name transfer is Austin Matthews. The former PIAA State Champion from Reynolds will be making the move from Clarion to Edinboro. Matthews had a tremendous true-freshman season last year qualifying for the NCAA National Tournament and being named the EWL Freshman of the Year. Speaking of Clarion wrestling, there have been rumors recently that head coach Troy Letters may be leaving the Golden Hawks, nothing official at this point only here-say.

The biggest name in Pennsylvania Wrestling, Chance Marsteller, is reportedly stepping right into the Oklahoma State Cowboy line-up in his true-freshman season. Marsteller, the undefeated 4x PIAA State Champion from Kennard Dale, suffered a back injury late last season and his status for the 2014-2015 season was questionable. According to FloWrestling’s Christian Pyles, Chance Marsteller will be stepping in right away to compete at 157 lbs for head coach John Smith this season. In his senior season Chance competed at 170 lbs. and won his first PIAA State title as a freshman at 152 lbs. It will be interesting to see a leaner Marsteller at 157 lbs. competing against his toughest competition since dominating Pennsylvania the last four seasons.
