State Medalist #17 Ethan McCoy Commits to Kent State

DSC_0090Greater Latrobe senior #17 Ethan McCoy has committed to the Kent State Golden Flashes. A talented lightweight Ethan has made strides since beginning his high school career in 2012 at Kiski Prep. As a rookie McCoy had a successful showing advancing into the National Prep Finals at 106 lbs. where he fell in a wild high scoring overtime match to Jack Mueller (Texas) score (15-13 OT). The National Prep Runner-up returned home to Latrobe where he would benefit from work-out partner Luke Pletcher.

Some would say McCoy had a “sophomore slump” in his first season competing in the PIAA but it would be an unfair assessment. Competing at 113 lbs. McCoy finished fourth at the King of the Mountain and was the POWERade Runner-up. Five of his eleven defeats on the season came at the hands of Spencer Lee (Franklin Regional). After finishing second in the Section 1 WPIAL Tournament McCoy was unable to continue his post-season being sidelined with an injury.

His junior season went much better for Ethan despite having been diagnosed with mono midway through the season. Moving up to 126 lbs. McCoy earned his first trip to the PIAA State Tournament winning the South West Regional Championship and finishing in third place at the PIAA State Tournament.

As a senior Ethan will do battle with the State’s top wrestlers and expect to see him high on the podium come March. Competing for the Golden Flash Ethan projects to compete at 133 lbs.
