Verkleeren Wins Cadet Freestyle Nationals in Fargo

Belle Vernon Area wrestler Jared Verkleeren bounced back in a big way. Five days earlier Verkleeren was in Snina, Slovakia competing for the United States Cadet Freestyle team at 63 KG/138 lbs. There the 2014 PIAA State Tournament Qualifier went one and done falling in his first match to Gevorg Mkheyan of Armenia (6-2).

After several time zones and airports later Verkleeren returned to the United States a few pounds heavier and a strong appetite for competing. Instead of returning home to Pennsylvania and soaking up the experience of competing for Team USA on the International level, Jared flew to Fargo, North Dakota where he competed in the USAW Cadet Freestyle Nationals at 145 lbs. Verkleeren not only captured the USAW Cadet National Freestyle Championship but he did so in dominating fashion.

The Belle Vernon Area Leopard recorded six (6) victories by technical-fall including an (11-0) win in the Championship finals. Only one of his seven matches went the distance and Verkleeren narrowly escaped defeat winning on criteria in the quarterfinals over Oregon’s Layne VanAnrooy (8-8). In total Verkleeren had a point difference of (74-11) in his seven matches.

Joining Verkleeren in the Cadet National Freestyle finals was Central Cambria’s Max Murin who finished as the runner-up at 100 lbs. Murin, a PIAA Class AA State fifth place finisher in 2014, earned five straight technical-fall victories en route to the finals. The rising sophomore dropped a (9-0) match in the finals to Arizona’s Roman Bravo-Young. Finishing third at 100 lbs. was Pennridge Ram Matt Parker, younger brother of 2014 PIAA State Runner-up Scotty Parker, whose only defeat of the Tournament came to the Champion Bravo-Young (13-4). Also finishing in third place was Eric Hong (Pittsburgh, PA) at 132 lbs. Hong, a Pennsylvania Native, is a rising sophomore who was a National Prep Medalist for Georgetown Prep in Maryland in 2014.

Other All-Americans from Pennsylvania were Jonathan Ross (Northern York) Fifth Place at 145 lbs.; Jake Woodley (North Allegheny) Seventh Place at 152 lbs.; Jared Siegrest (Manheim Central) Fourth Place at 170 lbs. John Jakobsen (Stroudsburg) Fourth Place at 182 lbs.; Zane Black (Bishop McDevit) Fifth Place at 195 lbs.; Francis Duggan (Cumberland Valley) Seventh Place at 195 lbs.; Cole Nye (Bishop McDevit) Fourth Place at 220 lbs.; Anthony Piscopo (LaSalle College) Fifth Place at 220 lbs.
