WPIAL Finals Set to Feature Four #1 vs. #2 in the State

Four of fourteen WPIAL Finals will consist of the #1 vs. #2 ranked wrestlers in the State.

At 113 lbs. 2x PIAA State Champion Devin Brown (Franklin Regional) will take on #2 Gage Curry (North Hills) in a rematch of the 2014 WPIAL Finals at 106 lbs. Brown is favored but Curry will keep it close.

Surprisingly 2x PIAA State Champion #1 Luke Pletcher (Greater Latrobe) hasn’t faced #2 A.C. Headlee yet this season or in their careers. Pletcher was a 2014 POWERade Champion while Headlee finished in third.

Virginia recruits and PIAA State Champions #1 Sam Krivus (Hempfield Area) and #2 Cameron Coy (Penn Trafford) have faced off a total of four times already this season and each time Krivus has been the victor. Krivus downed Coy in the finals of the King of the Mountain, POWERade, Westmoreland County, and the WPIAL Section 1 Tournament. I don’t expect the tide to turn this time around but I also think this won’t be the last time these two meet this season.

The next meeting between #1 and #2 is at 160 lbs. where PIAA State runner-up Josh Shields will look to continue his dominance against the WPIAL. Shields will take on senior #2 Paul Dunn (Bethel Park) who was a PIAA State Third Place Medalist last season. The gap between this #1 vs. #2 is the largest of the four with Shields heavily favored.

 

106 lbs.

#3 Caleb Morris (Waynesburg Central) vs. #24 Job Chishko (Penn Trafford)

Last time they wrestled?  At the 2014 POWERade which Morris won (1-0).

 

113 lbs.

#1 Devin Brown (Franklin Regional) vs. #2 Gage Curry (North Hills)

Last time they wrestled?  The 2014 WPIAL Finals at 106 lbs. where Devin Brown won (2-1).

 

120 lbs.

#1 Spencer Lee (Franklin Regional) vs. #11 Zach Hartman (Belle Vernon Area)

Last time they wrestled? At the 2014 POWERade Tournament which Spencer Lee won by fall in (0:51).

 

126 lbs.

#11 Joey Blumer (Kiski Area) vs. #4 Ethan McCoy (Greater Latrobe)

Last time they wrestled? On 1/21/2015 in a dual meet with McCoy winning (2-1).

 

132 lbs.

#1 Luke Pletcher (Greater Latrobe) vs. #2 A.C. Headlee (Waynesburg Central)

Last time they wrestled?  These two have not faced off since 2011 in the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling State Tournament at 92 lbs. where Pletcher won (1-0).

 

138 lbs.

#1 Sam Krivus (Hempfield Area) vs. #2 Cameron Coy (Penn Trafford)

Last time they wrestled?  Take your pick. Last week Krivus beat Coy (2-1).

 

145 lbs.

#1 Mike Kemerer (Franklin Regional) vs. Jarod Verkleeren (Belle Vernon Area)

Last time they wrestled?  These two met when in the WPIAL Dual Team Finals where Kemerer was victorious (7-4).

 

152 lbs.

#1 Vincenzo Joseph (Central Catholic) vs. #4 Josh Maruca (Franklin Regional)

Last time they wrestled?  These two have not met in high school but over the summer Joseph was a Fargo Junior Nationals runner-up and Maruca was a third place medalist both at 145 lbs.

 

160 lbs.

#1 Josh Sheilds (Franklin Regional) vs. #2 Paul Dunn (Bethel Park)

Last time they wrestled?  These two met at the 2014 POWERade Tournament in the quarterfinals where Shields won by fall in (4:48).

 

170 lbs.

#4 TeShan Campbell (Penn Hills) vs. #5 Austin Bell (Belle Vernon Area)

Last time they wrestled?  In the first Tournament of the season, the Eastern Area Invitational at Gateway High School, TeShan Campbell defeated Bell (9-4).

 

182 lbs.

#1 Kellon Stout (Mount Lebanon) vs. #12 Milton Kobaly (Belle Vernon Area)

Last time they wrestled?  These two have met twice this season with undefeated Stout winning both, one on 1/21/2015 by decision (7-4) and last week in the Section 2 Finals where Stout won (9-3).

 

195 lbs.

#1 Drew Phipps (Norwin) vs. #7 Zach Smith (North Allegheny)

Last time they wrestled?  Like Campbell and Bell at 170 lbs. these two wrestlers met in the Easter Area Invitational Finals where Phipps won a close (3-1) decision over Smith. Then next time they squared off it was much closer when North Allegheny and Norwin met at the Franklin Regional Duals. In that match Phipps won (5-3) in ultimate tiebreaker.

 

220 lbs.

#5 Tyler Worthing (Kiski Area) vs. #2 Fred Mantsch (Hempfield Area)

Last time they wrestled?  These two have not faced each other this season but in 2014 Worthing defeated Mantsch (10-5) on 1/10/2014.

 

285 lbs.

#5 Tyler Mears (Greater Latrobe) vs. #27 Chase Logan (Hempfield Area)

Last time they wrestled?  It took sudden victory the last time these two met to determine a winner. That match which took place on 1/7/2015 with Mears the winner (3-1) in sudden victory.
