From start to finish the Class AAA WPIAL quarter-finals went pretty much as planned with the top wrestlers coming out on top and avoiding few upsets. The biggest upset in my mind occurred at 170 lbs. when sophomore Kellon Stout (Mount Lebanon) the #2 seed was pinned by Hempfield Area senior Dom Nania in 0:37 seconds. Stout, ranked #2 in the WPIAL, suffered only his fourth defeat on the season as he was upset by #10 ranked Nania. One of the more entertaining bouts came as the gym at Norwin High School was clearing out and the last Championship quarter-final match was being wrestled into ultimate tie-breaker. Senior Luke Fleck, a PIAA State Qualifier as a sophomore, was downed by returning State Qualifier Damon Sims Jr. of Hopewell. Fleck came into the WPIAL Tournament ranked #2 while Sims, a senior, came in ranked #4.

The usual suspects of WPIAL superstars advanced into the semi-finals as Franklin Regional’s foursome of middle weights all advanced, in addition to Canon McMillan’s impressive 9 wrestlers who will compete in the Semi-Final round.
