State Champ Pletcher Wins FloNationals in loaded Weight

The 2013 FloNationals took place in Pennsylvania for the second straight season but unlike 2012, Team Pennsylvania walked away with the Team Championship over returning Champions California. The most exciting weight-class for Team PA fans was by far the loaded field at 106 lbs. The weight featured both Class AA and Class AAA PIAA State Champions from a month ago, in addition to Nationally acclaimed junior high wrestler such as Eric Hong and Spencer Lee. Below is a breakdown of how all wrestlers from Pennsylvania faired in the 106 lbs. bracket.

At 106 lbs. it was a dominating performance by Team Pennsylvania with the top 7 medalists all hailing from the Keystone State. In the Finals, freshman 2013 106 lbs. PIAA Class AAA State Champion Luke Pletcher (Greater Latrobe) faced the talented eighth grader Spencer Lee (Saegertown). At the prestigious 2012 Super 32 Challenge Lee competed in the High School Division at 106 lbs. and was the runner-up while Pletcher was the third place medalists. Pletcher lost to eventual Champion Nick Suriano (New Jersey) by a score of (2-0) while Spencer Lee fell to Suriano in the finals narrowly by a score of (4-3). En route to the FloNationals Championship Finals Spencer Lee defeated Ethan McCoy (Kiski Prep), a 2013 National Prep runner-up at 106 lbs., by fall in (3:46). In the Championship semi-finals Lee dominated 2013 PIAA Class AAA State Third Place Medalist Tyrone Klump (Nazareth Area) by major decision (12-1).

At the 2013 FloNationals Pletcher improved on his 2012 Third Place finish by capturing the Championship over Spencer Lee (3-1). Pletcher was not the only PIAA State Champion in the bracket as sophomore Devin Brown (Saegertown), a 2013 PIAA Class AA Champion at 106 lbs., failed to place after falling in the championship third round to eighth grade wrestler Eric Hong of Pittsburgh, PA. Hong, a 5x Pennsylvania Junior State Champion, defeated Devin Brown (5-3 OT). The State Champion then faced fellow Northwest Regional wrestler Joe Wheeling (General McLane) who Brown defeated on 1/4/13 by fall in (1:53). This time, however, it was Wheeling who was victorious defeating Brown (11-6) in the Consolation round at 106 lbs.

After dropping his third round of the Championships, freshman Gage Curry (North Hills) won six straight matches by decision to earn the Third Place Medal 1t 106 lbs. Of those 6 consolation round victories, 5 were against Pennsylvania wrestlers. In the consolation finals Curry was able to outlast the super eighth grader Eric Hong by a (3-2) margin.
