PA’s ASICS University Freestyle National Champions
Three Pennslyvania wrestles captured the 2013 ASICS University Freestyle Nationals Championship. Penn State’s 2x NCAA runner-up Nico Megaludis (Franklin Regional) captured the 55 kg title over Minnesota’s All-American Zach Sanders 2 matches to 1. At 63 kg, former Nittany Lion wrestler and current Clarion grappler Sam Sherlock (West Mifflin), won the championship title over Brandon Wright 2 matches to none. The third PA native to capture the University National title was the high scoring Ed Ruth (Susquehanna Township) at 84 kg. The 2x NCAA Champion for Penn State showed off his freestyle ability with a victory over former Cornell wrestler and NCAA Champion Cam Simaz 2 matches to none.
Overall 14 PA Natives captured medals in an impressive performance for many current college wrestlers and recent graduates. One of the most exciting bouts of the day came when Harrisburg natives Ed Ruth and Kenny Courts met in the quarterfinals at 84 kg. Ruth attended Susquehanna Township High School while Kenny Courts attended Central Dauphin High School. The two are more than familier with each other. Courts and Ruth were in the same practice rooms as youth wrestlers and Courts spent some time with Susquehanna Township before his excellent career at Central Dauphin High School. Courts a 2x PIAA Class AAA State Champion is now at Ohio State University while Ruth was a National Prep Champion at Blair Academy his senior season before heading to Penn State University. Ruth is now one of the biggest names in NCAA wrestling with two undefeated seasons and two NCAA Div. I National Championships.
