POWERade Preview

The toughest Tournament in Pennsylvania and one of the tops in the Nation, the POWERade Chirstman Tournament, will take place this weekend in Cannonsburg, PA. The field will feature some of the State’s top wrestlers including 3X PIAA State Champions Chance Marsteller and Thomas Haines. Additionally, top ranked teams such as Franklin Regional,  will show off their talents. Top Incoming Freshman Spencer Lee has lived up to expectations and will put on a show in his first career POWERade. Re-matches are in store and a pair of Georgia powers, Pope and Collins Hill, will be making the trip to compete. The POWERade never disappoints and 2013 will be no different.

106 lbs.

The top story at 106 lbs. is the return of 2013 PIAA Class AA State Champion Devin Brown who will be wearing a Franklin Regional singlet for the first time after being ruled eligible by the PIAA this month. Brown was a POWERade runner-up last season falling to Class AAA 106 lbs. State Champion Luke Pletcher in the finals. This season Brown is the #1 seed as a junior but will have plenty of talented opponents. Last season’s PIAA Class AAA runner-up at 106 lbs. Senior Connor Sheehan (Solanco) has dropped to 106 lbs. and is the #2 seed after finishing 4th in last season’s POWERade. Rounding out the top 8 seeds are a group of sophomores from various Pennsylvania schools. Leading the pack is returning PIAA Class AAA State qualifier Jacob Lizak (Parkland). Several freshman who will be competing in their first career POWERade have potential to make some noise and disrupt the top 8. Altoona Area’s Cole Manley, currently ranked ___ in the State, will be among those to watch. Bishop McDevitt’s John Pippa and Central Catholic’s Michael Nagy may also hang with the top wrestlers.

 

113 lbs.

The Nation’s #1 wrestler at 113 lbs. in all grade levels will continue his undefeated freshman season as the #1 seed at the 2013 POWERade. Spencer “The Kid” Lee (Franklin Regional) has been nothing short of dominate this season winning the Walsh Ironman Championship and Outstanding Wrestler Award. Lee is the clear favorite to capture his first career POWERade Championship. McDowell sophomore Charlie Lenox placed 6 at 106 lbs. last seasons POWERade and returns this season at 113 lbs. as the #3 seed. Lenox had an impressive King of the Mountain Tournament by finishing second and pinning PIAA Class AA State runner-up Luke Karem in the semifinals. State qualifier and 7th place finisher at the 2012 POWERade Brandon Price (Canon-McMillan) is the #6 seed in his home gymnasium. Brookville Area sophomore Taylor Ortz, a 2012 POWERade 8th place finisher and PIAA State qualifier, is the 5 seed and should find his way to the medal stand for the second year. 2012 106 lbs. National Prep runner-up Ethan McCoy is competing in the PIAA for the first time as a sophomore and will be tested in a tough 113 lbs. bracket. McCoy placed ___ at the King of The Mountain Tournament and should help lead Greater Latrobe in the team race.

 

120 lbs.

Two 2012 POWERade Champions and PIAA Class AAA State Champions are on a collision course for the second time this season. 106 lbs. State Champion Luke Pletcher has moved up two weight-classes in 2013 and is the #2 seed behind 2X PIAA State Champion Ethan Lizak (Parkland). Lizak, who will attend Minnesota next season, fell to Pletcher in the finals of the King of The Mountain Tournament several weeks ago in ultimate-tiebreaker. Although the two are bound to meet in the finals, another PIAA State Champion may cause some trouble for both. Sophomore George “Mickey” Phillippi, a 2013 PIAA Class AA Champion at 113 lbs. is the #4 seed. Last week Pletcher and Phillippi faced off when Derry Area took on Greater Latrobe with Pletcher coming out on top (3-2). Joining these PA superstars is senior Jake Gromacki who already has multiple PIAA State medals to his name. Rickey Cavallo (Hempfield Area) enters his third career POWERade Tournament having an impressive season thus far. Cavallo placed third at the King of The Mountain Tournament. Other to watch include Kevin Miller (Norwin), David Pipa (Bishop McDevitt), Brendan Hasson (Belle Vernon Area). Freshmen Matt O’Block (Canon-McMillan) and Mike Stuart (Benton Area) could surprise the field.

126 lbs.

2013 PIAA Class AAA State runner-up Dalton Macri will be in search of his first career POWERade Championship on his home mat. Macri, a Cornell recruit who placed third at POWERade last season, is the #1 seed and the #1 ranked wrestler in the State in Class AAA. Junior A.C. Headlee sits in the #3 seed and recently dropped a 1-point defeat to Macri earlier this week. Headlee placed third last season at the POWERade and sixth in the PIAA Class AAA State Tournament. Rounding out the top 8 is #8 Terrance White (Bishop McDevitt) who will look to earn hardware in his first POWERade appearance. Non-seeded wrestlers to watch include Phillip Mary (Peters Township), Mitch Hartman (Belle Vernon Area), and Anthony Vitale (Benton Area).

The Winner: Ryan Millhof (Collins Hill, GA)

 

132 lbs.

Two 2013 PIAA Class AAA State Champions highlight a deep 132 lbs. weight-class. Junior Sam Krivus (Hempfield Area) was a PIAA State Champion at 120 lbs. last season and a POWERade runner-up. Similarly, senior Tyler Smith (Franklin Regional) was a 2013 PIAA Class AAA State Champion at 132 lbs. and a POWERade runner-up. Both these PA State Champions will be in search of their first career POWERade Championship. One of the top freshman in the State and Nation, Cameron Coy (Penn Trafford) will look to duplicate his King of The Mountain performance when he finished as the runner-up falling to Sam Krivus in the finals (1-0). The non-seeded freshman is very talented and could knock off quite a few seeded opponents. The two WPIAL stars, Smith and Krivus, are the only Pennsylvania wrestlers seeded in the top 8, however, several non-seeded wrestlers could make an impact. Included are State Ranked wrestlers Kyle Mallon (Father Judge), Tyler Buckiso (Peters Township), Tyler Vath (Saegertown), and Wyatt Jennings (Solanco).

The Winner:  Sam Krivus (Hempfield Area)

 

138 lbs.

The 138 lbs. bracket is arguably the deepest overall weight-class of the Tournament with juniors Michael Kemerer (Franklin Regional) and Vincenzo Joseph (Central Catholic) seeded #1 and #2 respectively. Kemerer was a POWERade Champion his freshman season and a runner-up last year in 2012. Kemerer, a 2X PIAA Class AAA State runner-up, is up two weight-classes this season and could face a familiar opponent in Joseph. The Central Catholic junior was a PIAA Class AAA State third place finisher last season and a fifth place medalist at the 2012 POWERade. Joining the two juniors is #3 seed Brock Zacherl (Brookville Area). The senior is the #1 ranked wrestler in the State at 138 lbs. in Class AA. Zacherl will look to improve on his 2012 fourth place finish at POWERade. Sophomore and returning PIAA Class AA State medalist Nick Monico is seeded #7 and in search of his first career POWERade medal. Several formidable wrestlers will be featured at 138 lbs. including State ranked wrestlers Alec Hutchin (Canon-McMillan), Richie McGinnis (Chartiers-Houston), Joey Alessandro (Hempfield Area), Hayden Hidlay (Mifflin County), and Italo Merante (Peters Township).

The Winner: Michael Kemerer (Franklin Regional)

 

145 lbs.

One of the Nation’s top wrestlers is featured at 145 lbs. in Kittanning’s Jason Nolf. The Penn State recruit is a 2X PIAA Class AA State Champion and only has one career defeat. Last season he captured a POWERade Championship by downing Tyler Smith (Franklin Regional) in the finals. Also in the top 8 include 2X PIAA State medalist #3 Josh Maruca (Franklin Regional) and 2X PIAA State qualifier #7 Max Good (Cedar Cliff). Maruca will be looking to improve on his fourth place finish at POWERade a season ago while Good will be in search of his first POWERade medal. Others to watch include Tony Palumbo (Central Catholic) Malichi Krenzelak (Canon-McMillan), Teagon O’Sullivan (Cathedral Prep), and Zach Mattucci (Greensburg Salem).

The Winner:  Jason Nolf (Kittanning)

 

152 lbs.

Returning POWERade Champion Josh Shields will be in search of his second straight title and the 2X PIAA State medalist is the #1 ranked wrestler in the State at 152 lbs. Joining Shields are a group of Keystone wrestlers who could all earn spots on the medal stand. Included is PIAA State medalist #3 Josh Ortman (Parkland), #4 Steve Edwards (Burrell), #5 D.J. Hollingshead (Altoona Area), and #6 Cole Walter (Mifflinburg Area). Additionally a total of 10 State Ranked wrestlers are included in the 152 lbs. field. The vast amount of talent at 152 lbs. indicates brutal wrestle-back rounds with all top 8 place winners having difficult paths to the medal stand.

The Winner: Josh Shields (Franklin Regional)

 

160 lbs.

Six of the eight seeded wrestlers are Pennsylvanian’s with Class AA stars Jeric Kasunic (Benton Area) and Brodie Zacherl (Brookville Area) seeded #3 and #4 respectively. WPIAL wrestlers #5 Dom Scalise (Greater Latrobe), #6 Devin Austin (Penn Trafford) and #7 Austin Bell (Belle Vernon Area) are all State ranked and will compete for POWERade medals. Freshmen Frank Guida (Parkland) and Colin McCracken (Waynesburg Central) could surprise the field in their first POWERade.

The Winner: Jake Henson (Pope, GA)

 

170 lbs.

There won’t be a repeat of last seasons epic showdown that featured Chance Marsteller (Kennard Dale) and Cody Wiercioch (Canon-McMillan) but fans will have the “Chance” to see Marsteller capture his fourth career POWERade Championship – joining an elite group of wrestlers. Marsteller is the #1 seed and the undefeated senior should have no issues making his way to the top of the podium. #2 seed Noah Wilps (Chartiers Valley) placed 7th in last season’s POWERade and also earned PIAA hardware at the State Tournament. Senior Zach Vroman (Brookville Area) also has a PIAA State medal to his name but will be in search of his first POWERade medal. The next three seeds feature WPIAL wrestlers #4 Kyle Coniker (Central Catholic), #5 Milton Kobaly (Belle Vernon Area), and #6 Derek Hull (Chartiers-Houston). Coniker is a tough senior who should wrestle to his seed and Kobaly is a dangerous wrestler who records falls majority of the time. Rounding out the top 8 is #7 seed Idris White (Father Judge) who was a 30+ match winner last season. Fans will also have the opportunity to see Bishop McDevitt freshman Zane Black compete in his first POWERade Tournament. Black has the potential to knock of several seeded wrestlers and don’t be surprised to see him on the medal stand come Saturday.
