Thomas Subaru, L-L League, Fred Bell and New Oxford Tournaments Wrap Up

Yes, the Team post-season is just around the corner, however, several individual tournaments took place this weekend that helped set the scene for the upcoming post-season. Headlining those tournaments were the Thomas Subaru Tournament at Bedford High School, the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championships held at Garden Spot High School, and the New Oxford Invitational.

Thomas Subaru

At the Thomas Subaru Berlin-Brothersvalley captured the team Championship ahead of Chestnut Ridge, Burrell, and South Fayette. At 106 lbs. freshman Sammy Hepler (Tri-Valley) earned an impressive major decision over sophomore and returning PIAA State Qualifier Aaron Burkett (Chestnut Ridge) in the finals (11-0). In the semifinals Hepler defeated junior Nolan Link (Penn Cambria) by a score of (3-1). Link went on to finish third at 106 lbs. Undefeated freshman Brock Biddle (Central) earned one of the Tournament’s biggest upset when he pinned Jefferson Morgan junior Brendon Howard in the semifinals at 113 lbs. Howard, a returning PIAA State Qualifier, rebounded to finish in third place. For Biddle he suffered his first career defeat at the hands of Bedford sophomore Jonathan Gabriel falling (12-2) in the 113 lbs. finals. #2 seed at 120 lbs. Joe Swank (Berlin-Brothersvalley) advanced to the finals with a (8-1) victory over Sage Moist (Mount Union Area) and faced #1 seed Caleb Bordner (Tri-Valley). Bordner is a 2x PIAA State Medalist for Tri-Valley but the junior was unable to hold off Swank, falling (10-7) in the 120 lbs. finals. Sage Moist finished in third place.

At 126 lbs. Jefferson Morgan’s undefeated senior John Demaske cruised to the Championship title not giving up a single point along the way. In the finals he downed Richland junior Adam George (5-0). Cambria Heights senior Joe Davis finished in third place at 126 lbs.

In the Tournament’s marquee finals match-up #1 State ranked Ryan Easter (Bedford) faced South Fayette sophomore #12 Michael Carr at 132 lbs. Easter, a 2013 PIAA State runner-up, was upset by Carr falling (6-2) to the sophomore and returning PIAA State Qualifier. Burrell’s senior John Andrejcik placed third slipping by Meyersdale’s Tanner Hetrick at 132 lbs. Yet another #1 seed was upended in the finals, this time third seed at 138 lbs, Bedford’s Garrett Thomas defeated Chestnut Ridge’s Dereck Claar (6-4). Although the seeds indicated an upset, Thomas entered the Tournament ranked #10 in the State while Claar came in at #16 at 138 lbs.

At 145 lbs. #6 seed Trent Crouse (Chestnut Ridge) knocked off second seed Corey Falleroni (Burrell) by fall before capturing the Championship with a (4-2 SV) win over Berlin-Brothersvalley’s Brandon Fochtman in the finals. #1 seed Hunter Harner (Tri-Valley) failed to medal and Beth-Center’s Anthony Welsh finished in third place at 145 lbs. Burrell senior Steven Edwards earned the 152 lbs, Championship with a (6-3) win over Taylor Cahill (Berlin-Brothersvalley) while Grant Fetchet (South Fayette) finished third with a (3-0) win over Jason Stay (Beth-Center) in the consolation finals at 152 lbs. Jefferson Morgan sophomore Bill Bowlen took down #1 seed Nico Pecora (Richland) in the semifinals (6-4) before outlasting #2 seed Austin Hummel (North Schyukill) in finals by sudden victory (7-5 SV). Pecora bounced back to finish a hard-fought third place with a (5-4) win over Landon Lohr (Somerset).

At 220 lbs. undefeated junior Buzzy Maines (West Branch) dominated the field picking up a major decision and three falls including a pin in the finals. Burrell 285 lbs. wrestler Al Beattie lived up to his #1 seed, using a (2-1 TB) victory in the finals over Nik Smith (Mount Union Area) at 285 lbs.

2014 Thomas Subaru Wrestling Tournament

New Oxford Invitational

The 2014 New Oxford Tournament may not have featured the biggest names in PA Wrestling but the field still had it’s share of talent. At 106 lbs. Philipsburg-Osceola freshman defeated Southern Columbia’s Shane Casey in the finals (4-2). At 113 lbs. Pottsville Area’s Luke Gardner had an impressive showing winning the 113 lbs. Championship over Philipsburg-Osceola’s Chris Thompson (7-3) in the finals. In the semifinals Thompson downed New Oxford’s suburb freshman Zurich Storm (10-9). Storm went on to finish fourth falling to Line Mountain’s Cameron Newman (4-1) in the consolation finals despite beating him in the Championship quarterfinals (11-7).

A would be exciting match-up failed to take place at 120 lbs. as Pleasant Valley’s Kenny Yanocich injury defaulted to Boiling Springs’ star Korbin Myers in the finals. Sothern Columbia Area freshman Todd Lane bounced back from a (9-1) defeat to Myers to finish third at 120 lbs. Boiling Springs made it two in a row as junior Grant Bond outlasted Marple Newtown senior Pat Callaghan in the finals (6-5). At 132 lbs. Hanover senior Ian Brown dominated the field picking up an impressive (16-3) major decision over previously unbeaten Joel Bowers (Punxsutawney) in the finals. In arguably the Tournament’s toughest weight-class Punxsutawney sophomore Kaleb Young flat out dominated several State ranked wrestlers en route to the Championship title at 138 lbs. Young earned a technical-fall over Northern York’s Jonathan Ross (15-0) in the semifinals before shutting-out Boiling Spring’s junior Kyle Shoop (10-0) in the 138 lbs. finals. Young reamained undefeated at (19-0) on the season.

At 145 lbs. Hanover’s Tyler Shafer defeated Boiling Springs’ John Vaughn (5-3) in a battle of two of the best 145 lbs. wrestlers in District 3’s Class AA. Returning PIAA State Qualifier Shane Runke (Great Valley) suffered a (12-8) defeat to Vaughn in the semifinals but rebounded to place third. At 152 lbs. sophomore Blake Marks (Southern Columbia Area) went unchallenged picking up two falls and two technical-falls en route to the Championship title. Lower Dauphin sophomore Bailey Shutt used a series of close decisions to claim the 160 lbs. Championship. Shutt took down Central Dauphin East’s Cevon Nyguyen in the finals (2-1 SV). Harrisburg’s Chrstian Gayle bounced back from a (3-2) defeat to Shutt in the semifinals to place third at 160 lbs. Returning PIAA State Qualifier Nick Mort (Fairfield) cruised to the 170 lbs. Championship with four total falls over his opponents.

In another talented weight, Northern York’s Kyle Koser won the 182 lbs. Championship earning a major decision over Casey Glunt (James Buchanan) in the finals (10-2). New Oxford senior Charlie Hoffman slipped by   Philipsburg Osceola’s Dennis Lumadue (2-1) in the consolation finals to finish in third place. Boiling Springs made it three Champions for the Tournament as Kyle Taylor won the 195 lbs. bracket. At 220 lbs. Gettysburg Area senior Scott Six upset #1 seed David Wuestner (Lower Dauphin) in the quarterfinals (7-2). Six advanced to the finals but fell short to Philipsburg Osceola’s Nick Gray by a (1-0) score. Wuestner rebounded and placed third at 220 lbs. Great Valley’s talented heavyweight Dean Land, the #1 seed, needed a pair of narrow victories to capture the 285 lbs. Championship. In the quarterfinals Lang defeated Clearfield’s Jake Verchick in overtime (3-2 OT). After advancing to the finals Lang faced Harrisburg’s talented senior upper weight Andrew Brown in a match that went to tie-breaker with Lang coming out on top (4-1 TB).

NEW HOLLAND: It was called the Lancaster-Lebanon League Wrestling Championships. In reality, it was more like the Solanco Benefit Tournament.

The Mules were that dominant. The numbers are staggering.

5: John Little was projecting three finalists, but his team exceeded those expectations by placing five in championship bouts. Even more impressive was that each one stood at the top of the podium as champions of their weight class.

9: Getting five wrestlers to the finals was quite an accomplishment. Even more impressive was the nine medalists the Mules managed in the two-day tournament.

59: The distance between the Mules and second-place Manheim Twp., who boasted three finalists and two champions, in the team standings.

Little’s wrecking crew tied the record for most champions in a single tournament — Manheim Central (1997) and Solanco last season each had five — and racked up 223.5 points to own the floor at Garden Spot High School.

“The thing is, with the seeds and who is where, I mean, you want to win everything but you have to be realistic with expectations,” Little said. “To go five-for-five, it’s unbelievable.
