Keith Gavin Wins U.S. Open as Ruth Impresses at 86 KG

Keith Gavin has firmly planted himself atop the Nation’s Mens Freestyle 86 KG/189 lbs. weight-class as he captured his second straight U.S. Open Championship. For the second season in a row Gavin met Clayton Foster in the finals and like in 2013 came away a winner. Gavin went on to represent Team USA at the World Championships at 86 KG. With his U.S. Open Championship Gavin will receive an automatic spot in the World Team Trials Championship. Gavin will face the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament winner to determine a spot on the USA World Team.

In total 14 Pennsylvania Natives took to the mats at the Las Vegas/ASICS U.S. Open. Of those 14 wrestlers who competed an impressive 7 came away with U.S. Open Medals. The top 7 wrestlers in each Olympic weight-class automatically qualify for the USA World Team Trials held in Madison, Wisconsin on May 31 – June 1.

2012 Olympic Bronze Medalist Colmen Scott (Waynesburg Central) returned to competition at 61 KG/134 lbs. advancing into the finals where he fell to former Illinois standout Jimmy Kennedy (7-2). It was Scott’s second straight runner-up finish at the U.S. Open since his dramatic 2012 Olympic Games performance where he came home with the Bronze Medal. Last season Scott fell to Reece Humphrey in the U.S. Open finals. Fellow Oklahoma State National Champion Jordan Oliver (Easton Area) competed in a stacked 65 KG/143 lbs. weight-class. In the semifinals he fell to Kellen Russell and was forced to injury default his remaining matches to end up in sixth place.

Just off his third NCAA Championship Penn State’s Ed Ruth (Susquehanna Township) looked poised for his Senior Freestyle career coming away in third place at 86 KG/189 lbs. In the semifinals Ruth dropped an entertaining and high scoring bout to Clayton Foster (13-12) but rebounded to finish in third place. Ruth’s former teammate and 2x NCAA Champion Quentin Wright (Bald Eagle Area) made it three Pennsylvania Natives to place in the Top 8 as he finished in seventh at 86 KG/189 lbs. joining Gavin and Ruth on the medal stand. Journeyman Mark McKnigh (Chartiers Valley) picked up a seventh place finish at 57 KG/125.5 lbs. while Easton native Justin Grant also captured seventh place at 125 KG/275.5 lbs.
