PA Crowns 4 Champions at Cadet Freestyle Nationals

Franklin Regional’s Spencer Lee captured his second straight Cadet National Freestyle Championship.
Pennsylvania crowned an impressive four (4) National Freestyle Champions in Akron, Ohio on Sunday. Leading the way was 2014 PIAA State Champion Spencer Lee (Franklin Regional) who went unchallenged en route to the 50 KG/110 lbs. title. Lee won all seven of his matches by technical-fall outscoring his opponents by an outstanding (72-1) point margin. It was Lee’s second straight FILA Cadet National title at 50 KG as he captured the 2013 National Championship.
Also dominating the field was Gavin Teasdale who will attend Jefferson Morgan High School next year. Teasdale was a USAW Cadet Freestyle Champion last season in Fargo, ND at 88 lbs. and earned a spot on the 2014 USA World Team by winning the 39-42 KG/ 85-92 lbs. Championship. Teasedale dominated his six matches outscoring his opponents (66-4).
At 63 KG/138 lbs. Belle Vernon Area High School freshman Jared Verkleeren put his name on the National map with an impressive Championship title in a stacked weight-class. Verkleeren, a 2014 PIAA State qualifier at 145 lbs., stormed out to 9 straight victories including a (12-1) technical-fall over fellow freshman and 2014 132 lbs. PIAA State Champion Cameron Coy (Penn Trafford). The freshman captured his first Cadet National Freestyle Championship and will earn a spot on the USA Cadet Freestyle World Team.
2x PIAA State runner-up Jordan Wood (Boyertown Area) improved on his Cadet National Greco-Roman runner-up finish by capturing the Cadet National Freestyle Championship at 85 KG-100 KG/187 lbs.-220 lbs. Wood secured his first Cadet National Freestyle Championship with 7 straight victories including three tech-falls and two pins. The sophomore will join the other three National Champions from PA on the USA World Team.
PA’s lone medalist that was not a Champion was Punxsutawney Area sophomore Kaleb Young at 69 KG/152 lbs. Young, a 2014 PIAA State fifth place Medalist at 138 lbs., was able to earn sixth place after winning his first five matches of the Tournament.
