State Champs Murin and Wentzel Claim Sheetz Holiday Titles
For the third year in a row #2 Max Murin (Central Cambria) faced off with Altoona Area’s #5 Cole Manley at the Sheetz Holiday Classic. In 2013 the two freshmen met in the semifinals at 106 lbs. with Murin winning (1-0) and would win the Championship while Manley finished in third. A season later the two met in the 113 lbs. finals with Murin earning his second straight championship (4-1) over Manley. Both wrestlers went on to find success at the PIAA State Tournament with Murin winning the 113 lbs. State Championship and Manley becoming a PIAA State Runner-up at 106 lbs.
In 2015 it was again Max Murin who was crowned the Sheetz Holiday Classic Champion for the third straight season – this time at 126 lbs. Cole Manley, who made his season debut at the Sheetz Classic, entered ranked #5 in the State at 120 lbs. while Murin ranked #2 at 126 lbs. Manley, who plans on dropping to 120 lbs., gave it his best effort against Murin falling in tiebreaker (2-1 TB).
The second highlight final came at 160 lbs. with 2015 PIAA State Champion #1 Jake Wentzel (South Park) and #2 Robbie Patrick (Ligonier Valley) squaring off. Senior Jake Wentzel was able to hold off the talented sophomore and returning PIAA State Runner-up picking up a (3-0) decision. It was Wentzel’s third straight Sheetz Holiday Championship in as many tries.
Other highlights included 113 lbs. where #4 William Girard (Williams Valley) defeated #3 Kevan Gentile (Jim Thorpe Area) by a score of (10-5) in a battle of two returning PIAA State Medalists. At 182 lbs. 2015 PIAA State Champion #2 Greg Bulsak (South Park) dominated the field pinning four of his opponents in the first period and adding a major decision to win his first career Sheetz Holiday Classic Championship. Returning PIAA State Medalist #2 Josh Lind (Mount Pleasant Area) won the heavyweight Championship with four falls.
