POWERade Concludes In Grand Fashion

The 49th Annual POWERade Tournament saw history take place as Latrobe senior #1 Luke Pletcher became just the sixth wrestler in the Tournament’s history to win four Championships titles. For the second year in a row Pletcher had to get through Derry Area 2x State Champion Micky Phillippi to earn POWERade gold. The pair met for the second time in a week but this go around did not go into overtime. Pletcher was able to secure a takedown in the first period and earn a (3-1) decision.

Other POWERade Finals highlights included the #1 and #2 Ranked wrestlers in the Nation going head-to-head at 152 lbs. There Mason Manville (Wyoming Seminary) earned a narrow (2-1 TB) decision over Hayden Hidlay (Mifflin County) in a grueling affair. The two have now met five times since May 2015.

Jefferson Morgan sophomore Gavin Teasdale remained undefeated in his career winning his second straight POWERade Championship over Delbarton, New Jersey’s Patrick Glory (6-5). Unseeded Jake Riegel (Wyoming Seminary), a former PIAA State Champion for Bethlehem Catholic, showed guts in a (4-1) decision over #1 Cole Matthews (Reynolds) at 126 lbs.

At 170 lbs. senior #1 Austin Bell (Belle Vernon Area) faced his toughest challenge of the season when he had to come from behind against #5 Nino Bonaccorsi (Bethel Park). Bell used his signature spin around from neutral to secure a winning takedown in the third period (5-4).
