4x NCAA All-American Nico Megaludis (Penn State / Franklin Regional) finally captured a National Championship after making his third trip to the Finals. It was a storybook ending to one of the greatest careers in Penn State history. Megaman had placed second as a freshman in 2012, again a runner-up in 2013, and third in 2014. After a redshirt year last season Nico was poised to end his career on top. In the finals Megaludis did what he does best, scrambling, and getting to his offense. A 3x PIAA State Champion for Franklin Regional Nico ended his Nittany Lion career with a (119-20) career record and 4x NCAA All-American.

Megaludis’ teammate and fellow Pennsylvania wrestler Zain Retherford (Penn State / Benton Area) also knew what it felt like to fall short of his goals. In 2014 as a true freshman Zain Retherford cemented his name in NCAA History when he defeated Ohio State Buckeye Logan Steiber in Rec Hall. That season Retherford finished fourth in the NCAA Tournament at 141 lbs. setting the bar high for his future development. After taking a redshirt year last season “The Zain Train” moved up to 149 lbs. in 2016 and was the most dominate wrestler in the Nation punishing his opponents from all three positions. Retherford made it look easy and expected as he earned a major decision victory in the finals over the second ranked Brandon Sorensen of Iowa. As Flo Wrestling’s ‘By The Numbers’ indicated, if Zain Retherford competed as his own team at the NCAA Tournament, Team Retherford would have finished 16th in the team standings with 28.5 points, which was 1.5 more points than Minnesota.

Pennsylvania went 2-for-3 in the 2016 NCAA Finals with redshirt freshman Jason Nolf (Penn State / Kittanning) falling short of his NCAA Championship goal. Despite dominating Isaiah Martinez in their first career meeting the returning NCAA Champion clearly studied film and was able to stop Nolf’s ‘in your face offense’ while successfully scoring off his slick and quick movements.

Overall Pennsylvania had 62 NCAA Qualifiers, 12 All-Americans, and 2 NCAA National Champions. Below are the complete results of all 62 Pennsylvania wrestlers who competed over the course of three days in New York City in addition to the final brackets. Stay tuned for an in-depth look at how Pennsylvania Wrestling performed at the 2016 NCAA National Tournament.
