Jaret Lane Leads 5 PA All-Americans in Junior Greco-Roman Nationals
It may not have been exactly similar to 2015 for Jaret Lane but the end result was all that mattered for the rising junior. On Tuesday the 2x PIAA State Medalist won his second straight Fargo Junior Greco-Roman National Championship, this time in dramatic fashion. Lane, who won the 100 lbs. Championship in 2015, competed at 106 lbs. and was a solid favorite to repeat up a weight. It was business as usual for Lane in his first three bouts grabbing three wins, all by first period falls, to advance into the Championship Semifinals.
There for the second straight year Jaret faced Texas wrestler Nathan Rankin in the Championship semifinals. In 2015 at 100 lbs. Lane defeated Rankin by tech-fall (22-10) but had a much closer match in 2016. The two battled to a (10-10) score after two periods of action but Lane was declared the winner on criteria having the highest value scoring actions in the bout. The win placed Lane on the main stage for the second time in the Fargo Dome. Again Jaret Lane met a familiar opponent in the Championship finals as he faced off with Elijah Varona (Florida). In 2015 Lane defeated Varona in the Junior National Greco-Roman finals at 100 lbs. winning the Championship (8-3). This time around Lane nearly fell to Varona who held a (2-1) advantage late in the second period. With less than ten seconds left on the clock Lane needed points and quickly. That he did, connecting on a throw that would earn him four points and ultimately his second straight Junior National Championship in Greco. Lane stated it all happened so fast. “I’m not really sure what move I used. I just had double under-hooks in and ended up throwing him to his back.”
The road to his 2016 Championship was much different than 2015 but the experience helped him get pumped up for Freestyle. “It was awesome to get back on the big stage again and win another title. It got me focused for Freestyle and exposed to the atmosphere so I’m ready to roll when the time comes.”
Lane was one of five All-Americans for the Keystone State with National Prep star Eric Hong (Kiski Prep) finishing sixth at 160 lbs.; District 12 sensation Miles Lee (South Philadelphia) battled his way to a third place finish at 195 lbs. The 2016 PIAA State Qualifier went an amazing (8-1) in Greco-Roman only falling to eventual Champion Haydn Maley (Oregon) in the semifinals. It was a big improvement from Lee’s (1-2) finish last season in Fargo. A pair of Pennsylvania upper-weights claimed fifth place as Anthony Piscopio (LaSalle College) and Tommy Killoran (Boyertown Area) each finished fifth at 220 lbs. and 285 lbs. respectively. Both are high school graduates who will be competing at the next level in the fall. Piscopo is heading to Columbia while Killoran will attend Kutztown.
