Five Top 100 Pennsylvania Recruits Give College Commitments
Five more Top 100 Seniors from Pennsylvania’s Class of 2017 are off the big board as senior Drew Peck, Jake Hinkson, Brock Port, Evan Callahan, and Jake Cherry all gave verbal commitments to NCAA Division I programs this week.
#29 Drew Peck (Chambersburg Area) – Brown
PIAA State Fourth Place Medalist Drew Peck gave a verbal commitment to compete for Brown and head coach Todd Beckerman. The 2x PIAA State Qualifier finished on the podium for the first time in 2016 with an impressive fourth place finish at 182 lbs. In his career Drew is (103-28) and will be in the hunt for a PIAA State Championship his senior season.
#30 Jake Hinkson (North Allegheny) – Kent State
2x PIAA State Medalist Jake Hinkson is one of several North Allegheny Tigers who recently made a college commitment. The senior placed fifth as a sophomore and sixth in 2016. Hinkson is a hard nosed grappler who nearly always finds a way to win. Hinkson, despite finishing fourth in the South West Regional in both 2015 and 2016, shined in Hershey where he has twice earned big wins to end on the podium. He is (99-32) in his career and will be in the discussion as a top wrestler in the State. Jake will head west to Kent, Ohio and compete for head coach Jim Andrassy and the Golden Flash.
#35 Brock Port (Bellefonte Area) – Lock Haven
The cousin of PIAA Star and NCAA All-American Mitchell Port, Brock has shined in his career at Bellefonte Area High School. Port has qualified for the PIAA State Tournament in all three years and twice came away with PIAA State Hardware. As a sophomore he placed sixth and in 2017 he was seventh. As a senior Port will be a top contender in the State. The senior, who has a career record of (102-14), is staying close to home as he committed to Lock Haven and head coach Scott Moore.
#70 Evan Callahan (Bethlehem Freedom) – Harvard
Bethlehem Freedom senior Evan Callahan sprung onto the State scene last season going (29-7) and advanced into the PIAA State Tournament semifinals at 220 lbs. It was Evan’s first trip to Hershey and the junior made the most of it. Despite only having a career record of (55-20) Callahan will be a force in 2017 as he looks to repeat his post-season performance. Evan is not only talented on the mat but boasts a strong academic resume which landed him in one of the top institutions in the world as he committed to Harvard and head coach Jay Weiss. He projects to compete at 197 lbs. for the Crimson.
#91 Jake Cherry (Central Dauphin) – Pittsburgh
2x PIAA State Qualifier Jake Cherry (Central Dauphin) has committed to head coach Jason Peters and the Pittsburgh Panthers. Cherry has been a leading competitor for the Rams over the last three seasons racking up a career record of (112-32). In 2017 Jake will be looking for his third trip to Hershey and this time leaving with some hardware. Cherry has trained and competed with Team Naumen and will continue that trend at Pitt where Tyler Naumen is a volunteer assistant coach. Jake projects to compete at 125/133 in college.
