Murin's Win over Hoffman Highlights Sheetz Tournament
Sometimes, when a match is as highly anticipated as the Max Murin-Jimmy Hoffman final at the Sheetz Holiday Classic was, it’s tough to live up to they hype.
Saturday’s showdown between the 2016 PIAA runners-up – Murin in AA and Hoffman in AAA – didn’t disappoint.
Murin came from behind to beat Hoffman in a 138-pound match that most fans stuck around for in a bid to save the best for last at Mount Aloysius College in Cresson.

Hoffman, who was the tournament’s outstanding wrestler in winning the 132-pound crown a year ago, was the aggressor in the first period. He nearly came up with a takedown but couldn’t quite get his hands locked on a cradle, and Murin fought off the attempt to send the match to the second period scoreless.
Hoffman chose the bottom position in the second and didn’t have much going through the first 1:51. He got to his feet a few times but was never really close to escaping. Facing a restart with 9 seconds remaining in the second, Hoffman came up with a big move. He hit a Peterson that took Murin to his back, but the Central Cambria senior – who was a state champ in 2014 – managed to flop back and forth enough to avoid a two-count.
Trailing 2-0 entering the third, Murin chose bottom and quickly escaped. He got in deep on a shot and tried to stack Hoffman. He came close, but wasn’t able to get a fall and instead cut off for a takedown. He finished in a Turk position and was able to take Hoffman to his back that way. It was very tight – so tight in fact that it appeared to be cutting off Hoffman’s air supply – and eventually was stopped, but not until before Murin pushed the lead to 6-2.
The Iowa recruit showed the type of gas tank that makes him a nice fit for the Hawkeyes and was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler after winning his fourth Sheetz title.
Hoffman, a Lehigh recruit who sat down with us on the PA Power Podcast prior to the finals, proved that he’s more than capable with sticking with some of the top guys in the country, although his conditioning might not be where it needs to be yet.
