Upsets Abound in Class AA Opening Round Matches

#19 Sheldon Seymour (Troy) DEF. #5 Kyler Anspach (Northern Lebanon) FALL 1:25

#19 Sheldon Seymour (Troy) had the first major upset of the day when the rookie from Troy pinned junior #5 Kyler Anspach (Northern Lebanon) in the opening round. Seymour, who weighed in at 97 lbs., dominated the bout picking up a takedown and back-points in the first period. After giving up an escape Seymour went right back to work grabbing a takedown and used a power half to crank over Anspach for the fall in (1:25). The win gives Seymour a date with top seed #1 Beau Bayless (Reynolds) in the quarterfinals.

 

#14 Garrett Cornell (Everett) DEF. #5 Kyle Bush (Ridgway) 9-5

Sophomore Garrett Cornell picked a good time to get back into form after a SW Regional Tournament that he took fifth in. Cornell, a PIAA State Qualifier last season, opened the Tournament with an impressive (9-5) decision over Northwest Regional Champion#5 Kyle Bush (Ridgway). In the quarterfinals Bush will meet #3 Wyatt Lutz (Montoursville).

 

#16 John Wheeler (Northwestern) DEF. #4 Jacob Powers (St. Joseph’s) 1-0

Sophomore Johnny Wheeler made his GIANT Center debut with a major win at 120 lbs. when he upset South West Regional Champion Jacob Powers of Saint Joseph’s Catholic. Wheeler rode out Powers the entire second period then earned an escape to go ahead (1-0) where the match would end. He will face off with #6 Colin Pasone (E.L. Meyers) in the quarterfinals.

 

#14 Kenny Kiser (Saegertown) DEF. #5 Darren Yearick (Penns Valley) FALL 4:14

In a battle of freshman v.s senior Saegertown’s Kenny Kiser showed how dangerous he can be against returning PIAA State Medalist Darren Yearick (Penns Valley). With the match tied (2-2) Kiser took Yearick feet-to-back earning a fall in (4:14) to advance into the quarterfinals where he looks to take out #1 Cole Rhone (Benton).

 

#13 Bodee Tolbert (Bishop McDevitt) DEF. #6 Hunter Michaels (Reynolds) 2-1

Bishop McDevitt junior Bodee Tolbert took down a very tough Hunter Michaels at 132 lbs. with a late takedown to secure the win (2-1). Michaels, who punishes his opponents on top, rode Tolbert out in the second period but was unable to gather any back-points. Tolbert will now face Southmoreland’s #8 Tyler Griffiths.
