Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio – Malvern Prep senior Michael Beard said he felt somewhat nervous at the Ironman knowing he was expected to defend his title in the Nation’s toughest Tournament. The Penn State commit didn’t seem to let it bother him as he rolled to a (21-9) major decision in the finals against Jayden Woodruff (Ponderosa, CO) at 195 lbs. Beard was one of two Ironman finalists from Pennsylvania as Blair Academy sophomore and Keystone State native Ryan Miller (Stroudsburg, PA) was a runner-up at 106 lbs. to the top ranked wrestler in the Nation Jacob Decatur of Ohio.

Overall eleven Pennsylvania wrestlers left Ohio with 2017 Ironman hardware as PA State Champion Beau Bayless (Reynolds) took eighth at 113 lbs. and BECAHI sophomore Matt Lackman finished his strong Tournament with a seventh place finish at 120 lbs. Lackman’s teammate Ryan Anderson took third in a loaded 132 lbs. weight-class with several high profile wins across the way. Returning Ironman Champion Beau Bartlett (Wyoming Seminary) wasn’t able to defend his title but did take home third place at 126 lbs. picking up an impressive win over top seed Jordan Decatur in the consolation finals. 

Wyoming Seminary senior and Pitt recruit Jack Davis only fell to one wrestler in the Tournament losing to Luke Baughman (Wadsworth, OH) twice and claiming the fifth place medal at 138 lbs. Fellow Wyoming Seminary wrestlers Jake Hendricks (New Ringgold, PA), a UPenn recruit, took fourth place at 160 lbs. and Darrien Roberts (Stroudsburg, PA) finished in fourth at 182 lbs. picking up a quality win in the consolation semifinals over the #2 ranked wrestler in the Nation Ryan Karoly (Malvern Prep). Joining Roberts on the podium was Pennsylvania native and McDonogh School sophomore Jack Wimmer who took 8th at 182 lbs.

At 220 lbs. 2017 PIAA State Runner-up Ian Edenfield (Laurel Highlands) competed in his first Ironman and battled through some injuries to take 5th place against the Nation’s best wrestlers. Edenfield fell to second seed Ben Goldin (Lake Highland Prep, FL), who entered ranked #12 in the Nation by Intermat, in the semifinals but the one man team from the WPIAL grinded his way to a win in the fifth place bout.
