Mighty Cassar Propels #2 Penn State past #1 Ohio State in Sold Out Rec Hall

State College – Despite missing undefeated #1 Jason Nolf at 157 lbs. and dropping a swing bout at 141 lbs. the Penn State Nittany Lions found a way to surpass #1 Ohio State in front of a sold-out Rec Hall crowd on Saturday night. The win was highlighted by several factors but most notably at 197 lbs. where sophomore Anthony Cassar shocked #1 Kollin Moore winning (6-3) over the previously unbeaten and top ranked wrestler in the Nation.

In his first career performance for Penn State fifth year senior Carson Kuhn battled NCAA Champion Nathan Tomasello, giving up a major decision in what would be a win for the Nittany Lions. In a battle of two Pennsylvania wrestlers Luke Pletcher (Latrobe/Ohio State) outlasted Corey Keener (Blue Mountain/Penn State). Between the two wrestler they own a total of 5 PIAA State Championship titles.

It was one of two matches that featured head-to-head Pennsylvania natives. The other came at 165 lbs. where Pittsburgh, PA wrestlers Vincenzo Joseph (Central Catholic/Penn State) and Te’Shan Campbell (Penn Hills/Ohio State) locked horns with the returning NCAA National Champion Joseph earning a critical major decision (12-3).

The keys to Penn State’s victory were vast, however, several stood out more so than others.

  • Caron Kuhn only giving up 4 team points at 125 lbs.
  • Bo Nickal’s last second major decision over his rival Myles Martin at 184 lbs.
  • Anthony Cassar shocking Kollin Moore at 197 lbs.
  • Nick Nevills only giving up a decision against World and Olympic Champion Kyle Snyder at 285 lbs.

Stay tuned in to PA Power Wrestling as our college analysts Mason Beckman and Tristan Warner will be breaking down the dual on their college podcast.
