On a historic night Jefferson Morgan senior Gavin Teasdale became a 4x WPIAL Champion and freshman Conner Redinger became Quaker Valley’s first ever Champion. The Championship finals featured 23 wrestlers currently ranked Top 25 in the State but one of the biggest surprises came by unranked Trent Schultheis of Freedom Area at 132 lbs. The freshman entered Saturday’s WPIAL Championship with a (29-13) season record and a day earlier was the Section 1 runner-up. In the sectional finals he lost to Ellwood City’s Donovan Chambers (6-1) who defeated Schultheis for the fourth time this season.

On Saturday Schultheis owned the day picking up a fall in (0:45) over Avonworth’s Anthony Mundorf before upsetting #22 Jason Baker (Derry Area) in the quarterfinals by fall in (1:19). Baker previously defeated Schultheis two weeks earlier (8-6). In the semifinals Schultheis faced fellow rookie and #19 ranked AJ Corrado of Burrell. The pair faced off a month prior with Corrado winning (6-2). Trent left no doubt he belongs, turning in a (6-0) victory over Corrado and earning a spot in the Championship finals. 

In the 132 lbs. finals he faced Mount Pleasant senior Alex Miscovich who entered the finals with a career record of (126-46) having qualified for the PIAA State Tournament as a sophomore. Last season as a junior, competing at 132 lbs., Miscovich was fifth at the WPIAL Tournament and went a surprising (0-2) at the SW Regional. Although improving his finish from a season ago – Schultheis blocked Miscovich from a Championship winning (5-3) in the finals and capping an unexpected run to his first WPIAL Championship title.
