Pennsylvania Advances 14 into Super 32 Quarterfinals; 18 Alive in Consolations
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Saturday morning started with 186 wrestlers from The Keystone State competing in the 2018 Super 32 Challenge. When the dust settled in Greensboro – after 685 matches competed by Pennsylvania wrestlers – only 32 wrestlers remained. Of those 32 wrestlers 14 are in the Championship Quarterfinals and 18 are fighting back in the consolation round. A total of 37 wrestlers from Pennsylvania went (0-2) on the day. Pennsylvania wrestlers went (359-326) in 685 bouts wrestled which is 52.4% winning percentage.
Five PIAA champions and a National Preps winner paced Pennsylvania on Day 1.
They make up almost half of the 14 Keystone State wrestlers with a chance to bring home a belt on Sunday.
Reynolds’ Gary Steen (106), North Hills’ Sam Hillegas (132), Bethlehem Catholic’s Ryan Anderson and Frazier’s Thayne Lawrence (both 152) and Susquehanna Township’s Edmund Ruth (170) are the quarterfinalists who have won gold in Hershey, while Wyoming Seminary’s Beau Bartlett (132) captured a national championship last season.
They’ll be joined in the Super 32 quarterfinals by Pope John Paul II’s Ryan Vulakh (145); Lower Dauphin’s Clayton Ulrey (160); Canon-McMillan’s Gerrit Nijenhuis (182); McDonough School’s Jack Wimmer (195); Armstrong’s Ogden Atwood and Greenville’s Jacob McMaster (both 220); and Brookville’s Colby Whitehill and Mount Lebanon’s Nathan Hoaglund (both 285).
Officially, Pennsylvania has 13 wrestlers in the quarterfinals, but PA Power recognizes Anderson as representing the Keystone State since he wrestles in the PIAA but lives in New Jersey. According to FloWrestling, Pennsylvania and New Jersey are tied for the most quarterfinalists with 13 apiece.
Pennsylvania also has 18 wrestlers alive in the consolations, which is far more than any other state.
Anderson and Lawrence are on the same side of the 152-pound bracket, keeping alive the possibility of an All-Pennsylvania (sort of) semifinal.
That can’t happen at 220 pounds or 285, where the PA representatives are on opposite sides of the bracket.
