79 PA Wrestlers Compete 5 Earn Medals at University Nationals

North Carolina’s 2x NCAA All-American Evan Henderson appears to be poised for a National Championship run following a red shirt season in 2014-15.

The former United High School and Kiski Prep star captured the UWW University National Championship at 65 kg/143 lbs. over the weekend. Henderson placed sixth in 2013 and third in 2014 at the NCAA Championships and will be a front-runner at 141 lbs. in 2016 for a NCAA Championship.

Five total Keystone State natives earned medals in Akron, OH competing in Freestyle. At 57 kg former PIAA State Champion Darian Cruz (Bethlehem Catholic) finished as the runner-up. Cruz, a 2014 NCAA All-American, fell in the finals to former NCAA Runner-up Tyler Graff by tech-fall.

At 61 kg two former PIAA State Champions clashed in the third place match as Brock Zacherl (Brookville Area) of Clarion defeated Central Michigan’s Corey Keener (Blue Mountain) to claim third place by a (10-0) tech-fall. Keener’s Central Michigan teammate Mike Ottinger (Parkland) won a total of eight matches to finish in fourth place at 80 kg.

A large number of Pennsylvania wrestlers, 79 total, competed in the Asics University Nationals representing programs from all NCAA Divisions.
