#1 Austin Bell Wins Ironman Title; PA Earns 13 Total Medalists
The State’s #1 ranked wrestler at 170 lbs. Austin Bell (Belle Vernon Area) got his senior season off to an amazing start in Stowe, Ohio at the 2015 Walsh Ironman. Bell, a PIAA State Third Place medalist a season ago, entered the Tournament seeded fourth and after two tech-falls Austin found himself in the quarterfinals. There Bell squared-off with fellow Keystone State grappler Cody Mulligan (Saegertown) a sophomore and returning PIAA State Qualifier. Cody earned an impressive upset over the fifth seed Garrett Jordan (Graham, OH) in the first round in tie-breaker (8-7 TB). Austin Bell came out the winner over Mulligan (5-3) which was the closest margin of his five Tournament wins. Bell knocked off the #1 seed Brandon Dallavia (Blair Academy, NJ) in the semifinals and took down the #3 seed Jeremy Thomas (Calvary Chapel, CA) in the finals.
Bell’s teammate and UWW Cadet World Champion Jarod Verkleeren (Belle Vernon Area) was the #1 seed at 145 lbs. but despite a hard fought effort the junior had to settle for runner-up falling in the finals to Massillon Perry’s David Carr in ultimate tiebreaker (5-4 UTB).
Sophomore and returning PIAA State Champion Cole Matthews (Reynolds) nearly pulled off an epic run from the #12 seeded position. Matthews pinned the #1 seed and home town wrestler Alex Mackall (Walsh Jesuit) in the semifinals but fell in the Championship finals to #7 seed Tariq Wilson (Steubenville, OH) in a narrow (8-6) bout.
#1 Gus Solomon (Franklin Regional) was unable to match his 2014 Ironman finish of fourth place but did grab a fifth place medal in a talented 132 lbs. bracket.
Overall Belle Vernon Area finished in 6th place ahead of Malvern Prep in the team race. A total of 13 Pennsylvania wrestlers from eighth different programs ended on the podium.
