Rookie Jared McGill Takes Out State Champion Jon Gabriel

NEW PARIS – Chestnut Ridge’s Jared McGill entered his freshman season with a gaudy junior wrestling resume, including being a two-time Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling state champion and a five-time finalist.

But there’s probably not many who expected him to pull off the roof-lifting win he earned Friday night against Bedford returning state champion and Mirror co-Wrestler of the Year Jonathan Gabriel in the Lions’ 50-17 win.

In a wild back-and-forth 132-pound bout that was tied four times, McGill reversed Gabriel with 9 seconds remaining, rode him out and won, 10-8. The celebration of the Ridge fans and the Lions’ bench at Richard W. Fisher Gymnasium was almost deafening.
