Pletcher and Sasso Captivate Crowd as Class AAA Semifinals Set

The 2016 PIAA Class AAA Quarterfinals lived up to the hype. Fans at the GIANT Center witnessed numerous wild bouts. Below is a look at the semifinals and what is in store!

 

106 lbs.

#1 Tyson Klump (Nazareth Arear) vs. #6 Dalton Rohrbaugh (Spring Grove Area)

#12 Brandon Meredith (Spring-Ford) vs. #4 Louis Newell (Seneca Valley)

 

2015 PIAA State Champion Tyson Klump (Nazareth Area) duplicated his defeat from a season ago over #3 Geo Barzona (Central Mountain) in the quarterfinals (4-2). He moves on to face sophomore #6 Dalton Rohrbaugh who defeated #5 Job Chishko (Penn Trafford) in the quarterfinals (7-4). #12 Brandon Meredith pulled a huge win over #2 Patrick Gould (East Stroudsburg South) in the quarterfinals winning in overtime (7-5 SV). The win moves him to the semifinals against #4 Louis Newell who wrestled well against a tough #7 Zach Glenn (BECA) winning (3-2).

 

113 lbs.

#3 Matt Parker (Pennridge) vs. #8 Chris Wright (Central Dauphin)

#2 Julian Chlebove (Northampton Area)  vs. #7 Devin Schnupp (Warwick)

 

It was one of the biggest matches of the session between #1 Gage Curry and #3 Matt Parker at 113 lbs. and despite giving up a first period takedown #3 Matt Parker (Pennridge) battled back and scored a winning takedown to pull the upset (3-2). He will now face 2015 PIAA State Medalist #8 Chris Wright (CD) in the semifinals who defeated Penn Trafford rookie #15 Nick Coy in the quarters by fall. Last season these two met in the consolation round of the PIAA State Tournament at 106 lbs. with Parker winning (3-0). On the bottom half PA’s Top Incoming Freshman #2 Julian Chlebove (Northampton) wrestled a physical quarterfinal against #4 Logan Macri (Canon-McMillan) winning (5-1). In the semifinals he will face senior #7 Devin Schnupp (Wariwck) who upset #5 Jakob Campbell (Boyertown) in the quarters (3-2).

 

120 lbs.

#2 Austin DeSanto (Exeter Township) vs. #6 Hunter Baxter (Pine-Richland)

#1 Spencer Lee (Franklin Regional) vs. #4 Dan Moran (Northampton Area)

 

#1 Spencer Lee (Franklin Regional) wasted no time against #5 Zurich Storm (New Oxford) in the quarterfinals and after a takedown attempt by Storm, Lee took him down and pinned him in (0:39) seconds. He will face #4 Dan Moran (Northampton) who was a 2014 PIAA State Runner-up at 106 lbs. and defeated Mifflin County junior #18 Noah Myers (8-2). On the top half #2 Austin DeSanto (Exeter) had an impressive win over #3 KJ Fenstermacher (Liberty) in a physical quarterfinals (13-5). The junior will now take on #6 Hunter Baxter who defeated #11 Jose Morales (Conestoga Valley) in the quarters (6-4).

 

126 lbs.

#1 Tyshawn White (Central Dauphin) vs. #6 Chris Eddins (Greensburg Salem)

#4 Cole Manley (Altoona Area) vs. #2 Luke Karam (Bethlehem Catholic)

 

#1 Tyshawn White was able to come out on top of a scramble in the first period which was the deciding factor of a (5-3) match over #3 Wade Cummings (Downingtown East). He will now take on #6 Chris Eddins (Greensburg Salem) who pinned rookie #17 Devon Britton (Northampton) in the quarters. On the bottom half junior #4 Cole Manley (Altoona) defeated returning PIAA State Medalist #7 Ethan McCoy (Greater Latrobe) picking up a (7-4) win in a match he controlled from the start. He now has a date with #2 Luke Karam (BECA) in the semifinals. The 2x PIAA State Champion Karam has never not been in the State Finals in his career. He defeated #5 Chandler Olson (Shippensburg) for the second year in a row by major decision (11-0).

 

132 lbs.

#1 Zack Trampe (Council Rock South) vs. #10 James Hoffman (Hazleton Area)

#2 Zachary Hartman (Belle Vernon) vs. #7 Joey Gould (Bethlehem Catholic)

 

#10 James Hoffman (Hazleton) continued his winning streak earning a (1-0) decision over #4 Luke Kemerer (Hempfield Area) in the quarters. Hoffman, a junior, is earning his first PIAA State Medal in his three trips to Hershey. He will meet #1 Zack Trampe who is looking for his second straight trip to the PIAA State Finals. Trampe earned a (6-2) win over a scrappy #5 Joey Blumer (Kiski Area). On the bottom half #2 Zach Hartman (Belle Vernon) will take on BECA senior #7 Joey Gould. Hartman defeated Central Dauphin sophomore #9 Andrew Wert (5-1) in the quarters. Gould defeated #17 Tommy Zummo (Plum) score (4-1). These two wrestlers did not meet when #1 Bethlehem Catholic and #2 Belle Vernon wrestled in the PIAA State Dual Team semis.

 

138 lbs.

#1 Luke Pletcher (Greater Latrobe) vs. #4 Colin Cronin (Upper Darby)

#5 Evan Fidelibus (Easton Area) vs. #7 Shaun Wilson (Waynesburg Central)

 

It felt like a finals match with the entire GIANT Center focused on the match but it was a quarterfinal meet between #1 Luke Pletcher and #2 Sam Sasso. The match was a battle between two of the best wrestlers in Pennsylvania but in the end it was #1 Luke Pletcher who came away with the win. The senior and Ohio State recruit was a 2x PIAA State Champion his first two seasons before falling in the State finals in 2015 to senior AC Headlee (Waynesburg). Sasso and Pletcher wrestled in the 2015 King of the Mountain finals with Pletcher winning (7-5 SV) in overtime. In this bout no points were scored in the first period and Pletcher got on the board first with an escape in the second period. After a scramble from neutral that saw Pletcher in on Sasso’s legs and coming out the back, a penalty point was awarded to Pletcher when Sasso used a figure four on Luke’s head. The point would end up being the deciding factor. In the third period Sasso escaped and nearly had a take down at the edge but Pletcher held strong with a whizzer to hang on (2-1). Pletcher will now face #4 Colin Cronin (Upper Darby) who won over freshman Carter Starocci (Cathedral Prep) in the quarters (5-2). On the bottom half #7 Shaun Wilson (Waynesburg) upset #3 Riley Palmer (Council Rock South) in the quarters earning a takedown in sudden victory to win (9-7 OT). The senior will take on #5 Evan Fielibus (Easton Area) who pinned a tough #10 Doug Gudenburr (Ringgold) in the quarterfinals.


145 lbs.

#1 Cameron Coy (Penn Trafford) vs. #4 Luke Gardner (Pottsville)

#13 Lucas Martoccio (Council Rock South) vs. #3 Brock Wilson (Nazareth)

 

Junior and undefeated PIAA State Champion #1 Cameron Coy (Penn Trafford) controlled a (6-2) match over freshman #5 Edmund Ruth (Susquehanna Township). Coy will take on surging senior #4 Luke Gardner (Pottsville) who continued his winning streak pinning #9 Wyatt Jennings (Solanco) in the quarters. On the bottom half #13 Lucas Martoccio upset #2 Brock Port (Bellefonte Area) by a (2-1) score. The win sets up a meeting with #3 Brock Wilson (Nazareth Area) who shut-out #14 Dustin Stone (Harry S. Truman) in the quarters (6-0). The last time these two wrestled was at the Bethlehem Liberty Hurricane Classic in the finals of 145 lbs.

 

152 lbs.

#1 Hayden Hidlay (Mifflin County) vs. #3 Travis Stefanik (Nazareth)

#4 James Saylor (Easton Area) vs. #5 Cole Karam (Bethlehem Catholic)

 

One of PA’s best #1 Hayden Hidlay is looking for his first trip to the PIAA State Finals. The senior pinned #7 Derek Verkleeren (Belle Vernon Area in the quarters and will take on #3 Travis Stefanik (Nazareth Area) in the semis. Stefanik defeated #6 Felix Belga (Cumberland Valley) in the quarterfinals (6-3). On the bottom half #4 Jimmy Saylor and #5 Cole Karam make it three total wrestlers in the semifinals. #4 Jimmy Saylor reversed a decision from a season ago and upset #2 Jonathan Ross (Northern York) picking up a (5-1) decision in a match that he controlled from the start. He will meet #5 Cole Karem (BECA) for the third straight week. Saylor has won the last two matches by scores of (3-0) and (4-1).

 

160 lbs.

#1 Kaleb Young (Punxsutawney) vs. #11 Nick Carr (Abington Heights)

#2 Trent Hidlay (Mifflin County) vs. #4 Bailey Shutt (Lower Dauphin)

 

#1 Kaleb Young looked strong against #3 Josh Stilling (Pennridge) picking up a takedown and a fall in (1:24). He now faces senior #11 Nick Carr (Abington Heights) who defeated #26 Tyler Reber (Hempfield) in the quarters (9-4). #2 Trent Hidlay survived his second close bout in two days defeating #17 David Cox (Abington) by earning a late takedown (8-6). The sophomore will now take on #4 Bailey Shutt who defeated #13 Dan Iredale (Conestoga) in the quarters (3-1). Shutt and Hidlay wrestled at the CV Winter Duals back in January 2016 Hidlay winning (2-1).

 

170 lbs.

#6 Jared Siegrist (Manheim Central) vs. #2 Nino Bonaccorsi (Bethel Park)

#3 Austin Bell (Belle Vernon) vs. #1 Mike Labriola (Bethlehem Catholic)

 

One of the best semifinals of the day will be the battle between #1 Mikey Labriola and #3 Austin Bell. These two high powered grapplers are going to put on a show. Labriola placed fourth last season at 152 lbs. and Bell took third at 170 lbs. The Belle Vernon senior is coming off two straight weeks where he fell to junior #2 Nino Bonaccorsi. On the top half #2 Bonaccorsi is hoping to advance into his first PIAA State Finals but will face a very tough undefeated senior #6 Jared Siegrist. In 2015 Siegrist finished sixth at 170 lbs. while Bonaccorsi was sixth at 152 lbs.

 

182 lbs.

#1 Jake Woodley (North Allegheny) vs. #5 Drew Peck (Chambersburg)

#6 Milton Kobaly (Belle Vernon) vs. #2 Joshua Colello (Cedar Cliff)

 

One of the best quarterfinals was at 182 lbs. when #1 Jake Woodley came from behind to defeat #2 Kyle Gentile (Pennridge) score (5-3). Woodley gave up a takedown early but stormed back in the third period to come out on top. The Tiger will take on fellow junior #5 Drew Peck who defeated #17 Costas Hatzipavlides (West Chester Rustin) in the quarters (9-5). On the bottom half #2 Josh Colello defeated for the second season in a row #4 Gregg Harvey (Boyertown Area) score (6-2). The senior has looked to be on a mission and will face #6 Milton Kobaly in the semifinals. Kobaly is a funky wrestler who can score from anywhere and earned a (13-4) decision in the quarters over #15 Evan Morrill (Lower Dauphin).

 

195 lbs.

#1 John Jakobsen (Stroudsburg) vs. #9 Joe Doyle (Council Rock South)

#2 Drew Phipps (Norwin) vs. #14 Dylan Harr (Governor Mifflin)

 

#1 and #2 appear to be on path to meet with #1 John Jakobson picking up a fall over #6 Jesse Kann (Penn Manor) in the quarters. He will take on #9 Joe Doyle who upset #3 Eli Grape (Upper Saint Clair) in the quarters by fall in (5:39). The last time Jakobsen and Doyle meet it was a (10-1) major decision for Jakobson in the Escape The Rock semifinals. On the bottom half #2 Drew Phipps (Norwin) narrowly escaped #15 Brian Kennerly (Upper Darby) winning (5-4) in the quarters. He will take on surprise semifinalist #14 Dylan Harr who upset #5 Trey Hartsock (Mifflin County) in the quarters (4-3).

 

220 lbs.

#1 Jacob Robb (Armstrong,) vs. #6 Derek Berberick (Greensburg Salem)

#9 Evan Callahan (Bethlehem Freedom) vs. #4 Michael McAleavy (Peters Township)

 

#1 Jacob Robb’s opponents have yet to make it past the first period as he once again earned a fall over #2 Andrew Boob (Selinsgrove) in (1:45). The senior is on a roll and now faces #6 Derek Berberick who he defeated (8-0) two weeks ago. #9 Evan Callahan earned an impressive (8-3) decision over #3 Cameron Tinner (Shippensburg) score (8-3).

 

285 lbs.

#1 Andrew Gunning (Bethlehem Liberty) vs. #9 Isaac Reid (Kiski Area)

#3 Tommy Killoran (Boyertown Area) vs. ##7 Niko Camacho (Bethlehem Catholic)
