Megaludis First & Marsteller Second at Freestyle University Nationals
2016 NCAA Champion Nico Megaludis (Penn State / Franklin Regional) again rose to the top of the podium this time at the Freestyle University Nationals in Akron, Ohio (Photo of Nico Megaludis wrestling David Terao by Marc Bilet for PA Power Wrestling). Megaludis competed at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. and in the finals he took on All-American David Terao (American) in a best-of-three finals. The meeting was a rematch from the NCAA Semifinals at 125 lbs. in which Megaludis won (8-2). This time around the 3x PIAA State Champion again had no issues defeating Terao picking up two straight victories (9-4, 11-2). The victory places Megaman on the USA World Team that will travel to Corum, Turkey in October 2016 to compete in the World University Championships.
In total five Pennsylvania wrestlers finished in the top eight at the University Nationals with Chance Marsteller joining Megaludis in the Championship finals. Competing at 74 kg/163 lbs. the former 4x undefeated PIAA State Champion made significant strides going (6-0) and advancing into the Championship finals. Along the way Chance defeated 2016 NCAA All-American Thomas Gantt (N.C. State) in the semifinals (8-6). The new Lock Haven Bald Eagle made the most of his trip to Akron proving he can hang with the Nation’s best wrestlers. In the finals Chance faced 2x NCAA Champion Isaiah Martinez (Illinois) in the best-of-three series. The two put on a show in the first match racking up twenty-four points between the two as Martinez won (14-10). Martinez was able to secure a spot on the University World Team with a second win over Marsteller by tech-fall (15-5).
Redshirt freshman Michael Kemerer (Iowa / Franklin Regional) continued his off-season success in Freestyle by finishing in third place at 70 kg/154 lbs. In the semifinals Kemerer faced-off with his Hawkeye teammate Brandon Sorensen who was a NCAA Runner-up this season at 149 lbs. Sorensen won the bout (4-1) over Kemerer who bounced back with two tech-falls to finish in third place.
Former Dubois Area wrestler and current Penn State Nittany Lion Geno Morelli had a solid performance at 80 kg/176 lbs. The 2016 NCAA Qualifier went (4-1) advancing into the semifinals where he fell to Burke Paddock (Iowa) by tech-fall (15-4). Morelli was forced to injury default the rest of the Tournament to finish in sixth place.
The final University Nationals medalist from PA came at 86 kg/189 lbs. when NCAA All-American Pete Renda (N.C. State / Brandywine Heights Area) finished in fourth place. In the semifinals Renda fell to NCAA All-American Sammy Brooks (Iowa) by tech-fall (14-4). The former PIAA State Champion finished in fourth place going (5-2) on the Tournament.
