State Champion Cole Nye Selects Michigan State Plus More Commits
The first ever PIAA State Champion for the Bishop McDevitt Wrestling program has made his college decision. Cole Nye, a 2016 PIAA Class AA State Champion at 220 lbs., gave a verbal commitment to the Michigan State Spartans and first year head coach Roger Chandler.
Cole spoke to PA Power Wrestling and stated “I picked Michigan State because of solid academics, the awesome coaching staff, and unbelievable facilities. When I stepped on campus I felt welcomed by the team and knew right away that MSU was the place for me.”
Nye, ranked #13 in Pennsylvania’s Class of 2017, choose Michigan State over Maryland and Old Dominion. Cole enters his senior season with a (115-24) career record having won his first PIAA State Championship in his first trip to Hershey in 2016. Cole, who competed at Bishop McDevitt his freshman season, narrowly missed a spot in the PIAA State Tournament before transferring to National Prep power Wyoming Seminary. At Sem the sophomore finished sixth at the National Prep Championship before returning to McDevitt his junior season.
Considered one of the top upper-weights in the Nation Cole is a 2x Fargo All-American and has placed at both the Super 32 Challenge and Journeymen Classic. He projects to compete at either 197 lbs. or 285 lbs. at Michigan State.
Canon-McMillan senior Brendan Furman Commits to Cornell
Fargo All-American and Canon-McMillan senior Brendan Furman gave a commitment to the Cornell Big Red. Furman, who has a career record of (90-30), hopes to become the first ever National Champion at heavyweight for coach Rob Koll and Cornell.
Furman has yet to qualify for a PIAA State Tournament but is considered one of the top heavyweights in the State with promising potential. He is the #132 ranked senior from Pennsylvania in the Class of 2017.
The Big Mac will join his former teammate Dalton Macri at Cornell.
2x PA State Medalist Blake Reynolds Commits to Lock Haven
Greenville senior Blake Reynolds will be staying home in Pennsylvania to attend Lock Haven and compete for head coach Scott Moore and the Bald Eagles. Reynolds, who placed fourth in 2016 at 195 lbs., gave a verbal commitment to Lock Haven.
He enters his senior season with a career record of (116-25). He was a PIAA State eighth place Medalist in 2015 before improving to fourth in 2016. He is the #39 ranked senior in Pennsylvania of the Class of 2017.
