Megaludis & Oliver Lead Pennsylvania Contingent at Bill Farrell Memorial
Pennsylvania was well represented in the Big Apple in the Bill Farrell Memorial International Open with eleven wrestlers competing in Freestyle. Hosted by the historic New York Athletic Club the event also served as the U.S. World Team Trials for non-Olympic weights. Competing at 70 kg 3x PIAA State Champion and 2x NCAA National Champion Jordan Oliver (Easton Area/Oklahoma State) made a strong push into the World Team Trial Finals. Oliver won three straight matches in the challenge tournament to advance into the best-of-three series with World Bronze Medalist James Green. The two did battle in a high pace meeting but ultimately it was James Green who won the right to represent Team USA. Green grinded his way to a (4-3) win in the first match and a (2-1) decision to cap the overall victory.
Competing at 57 kg was 2016 NCAA National Champion and 3x PIAA State Champion Nico Megaludis (Photo by Marc Billet for PA Power Wrestling) who came away with the Championship title. His International Freestyle career is underway and Mega Man looked sharp in three straight wins. He downed Uzbekistan’s Nodirjon Safarov in his opening bout then earned a rematch win over David Terao in the semifinals (7-0). Megaludis had no issues in the Championship finals as he took down Russia’s Khasankhusein Badrudinov (6-1).
Several other Keystone State grapplers fared well against National and International competition with many picking up quality wins. Evan Henderson, a former North Carolina Tar Heel who now coaches at Campbell University, collected three wins at 65 kg all by technical superiority and dropped a close (4-3) match to eventual runner-up Hunter Steiber.
Most notably was former 4x undefeated PIAA State Champion Chance Marsteller who made his return to official competition following his arrest for multiple crimes including six counts of aggravated assault during a drug and alcohol induced incident. Marsteller, who waived him preliminary hearing to criminal court, was removed from the Lock Haven wrestling program. Chance competed for the first time at the Bill Farrell International Open and looked sharp considering the circumstances. Competing at 74 kg/163 lbs. Marsteller advanced into the Championship semifinals with three straight wins to face his former Oklahoma State Cowboy teammate and 3x NCAA National Champion Alex Dieringer. It took eventual tournament champion Dieringer (2:18) to pick up a (10-0) technical fall over Marsteller who dropped his consolation semifinal bout to Russia’s Khalil Aminov (6-0). Overall, however, Chance showed promise as he looks to get on the right path both on and off the mat.
