Chlebove and Labriola Lead Pennsylvania at Beast of The East
Traditionally the Keystone State has excelled in Delaware at the Beast of The East and 2016 was no different. Headlining the performance were a pair of District 11 studs in 2016 State Champion Julian Chlebove and Mikey Labriola. The two were joined by two other Pennsylvania wrestlers as Malvern Prep teammates Michael Beard and Seth Janney each claimed Beast Championships.
Overall Pennsylvania came away with 31 total medalists including 4 Champions. Chlebove entered as the third seed at 126 lbs. but upended second seed Chris Cannon (Blair Academy) in the semifinals (6-2) advancing into his first Beast of the East finals to face top seed Nick Ramio (Hanover Park, NJ) who ranks #5 in the Nation according to Intermat. Last season Chlebove faced off with Ramio in the consolation round falling (5-3) and went on to finish seventh in the Beast while competing at 120 lbs.
The Northampton Area sophomore and 2016 PIAA State Champion, ranked #12 in the Nation by Intermat, came from behind to earn the victory (3-2). The Beast of The East “Outstanding Wrestler Award” went to non-other than Mikey Labriola the Bethlehem Catholic senior who won the 170 lbs. bracket is dominating fashion.
A year ago Labriola fell in the Beast of the East finals to Blair Academy senior Brandon Dallavia (6-3) but in 2016 the storyline was much different. The Nebraska recruit had no issues capturing the Ironman Championship last weekend in Ohio and he continued that trend in Delaware. The top seed at 170 lbs. Labriola picked up three tech-falls and two falls en route to the Championship title. Clearly the most dominating wrestler of the field Labriola was rightfully voted the Tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler.
Likewise, Malvern Prep junior Michael Beard added a Beast of the East Championship to his season’s accomplishments after rolling to a Ironman Championship last weekend. Beard also was a 2015 Beast of The East runner-up but returned in 2016 to claim the Championship title. The National Prep Champion made a strong case himself for the Outstanding Wrestler Award as he grabbed two falls, two technical-falls, and a medical forfeit in the finals to win the 182 lbs. Championship. Beard was set to face in the finals for the second week in a row Travis Stefanick (Nazareth Area). In that match Beard earned a major decision to claim the Ironman Championship but round two would not take place as Stefanick medically forfeited.
Beard’s teammate Seth Janney, a National Prep Champion and former PIAA State Runner-up, earned revenge on his way to claiming the Beast Championship at heavyweight. In 2015 Janney was denied a spot on the Beast podium at heavyweight despite his sixth seed. In the Championship round Seth fell to Bethlehem Catholic’s Niko Camacho by a (10-3) score and fell again the consolation round. Camacho went on to finish in third place. Last weekend the two faced off yet again this time in Ohio at the Ironman and while slighlty closer in score Camacho again came out the winner. Niko went on to win the Ironman Championship which earned him the top seed at the Beast of The East.
This weekend, however, Janney was able to upend Camacho in the Championship semifinals and went on to win the Beast title over National #8 Kevin Vough (Ohio) in the finals by a narrow (9-8) decision.
