#12 Northern Lebanon Stops Champs #2 Brookville in First Round
The PIAA Class AA State Team Tournament got interesting when #2 Brookville Area, the 2016 PIAA State Champions, fell in the first round to #12 Northern Lebanon to bust the bracket open. Northern Lebanon now advances into the quarterfinals where they will face yet another daunting task with #4 Southern Columbia.
The District 4 Champions picked up several big wins in their victory over #10 Harbor Creek. At 170 lbs. #14 Preston Zachman, a rookie for Southern Columbia, took #7 Zach Cassidy into sudden victory when he earned a fall to pick up 6 critical team points.
District 4 Runner-up Line Mountain earned a (31-29) win over WPIAL Champion Burrell. The dual started off with a bang, as #9 Collin Klinger beat #13 Dillan Jeffrey in a bout that had a major impact on the final score. Burrell won the next bout between ranked wrestlers, as #19 Trent Valovchik scored a (12-2) major decision over #11 Matty Coller. It was the third matchup of ranked wrestlers that ended up determining the outcome of the dual, however, as #12 Cole Hauck beat #22 Trent Bechtold (7-2) in the final contested match.
One of the biggest matches of the first day came at 160 pounds in District 6 champ Huntingdon’s victory over District 4 third-place finisher Wyalusing Valley. The Rams’ #3 Creighton Edsell led #1 Seth Baney of Huntingdon (6-4) in the third period before Baney came up with a shrug to an inside trip. He caught Edsell on his back and pinned him with just 18 seconds remaining in the match. The Bearcats’ other top-ranked wrestler, 170-pounder Jacob Oliver, followed that up with a (15-0) tech fall over No. 18 Ed Mapes.
#1 Reynolds dominated their dual with Honesdale, but the Hornets won the only bout featuring a pair of ranked wrestlers. #22 Alec Dragos, who at #22 is Honesdale’s only ranked wrestler, beat #12 Jarod Miller 10-9 at 195 pounds.
Saegertown might have lost a (36-29) dual to District 3 champion Bishop McDevitt, but the Panthers won two of three bouts between ranked wrestlers. At 145, #2 John Pipa scored a (17-7) major decision over #14 Jude Mattocks. Saegertown took the next two, as #21 Tyler Brooks beat #20 Dray Donley (11-5) at 220 and #10 Kenneth Kiser edged #19 Tyler Martin (2-0) at 120 pounds.
Despite having seven ranked wrestlers between Chestnut Ridge and Freedom Area, only one match managed to pit them against one another. It was a good one, as #1 Justin McCoy overcame an early takedown to beat #5 Kody Komara. The match was tied at 5 entering the third period, when McCoy escaped. He used a go-behind for a takedown to beat the Freedom wrestler for the second time this season.
Eleven of the 14 bouts in the Brookville-Northern Lebanon dual featured ranked wrestlers, including four head-to-head matches. #6 Trevor Leonard got the Vikings off to a good start with a (10-0) major decision over #23 Steven Sorbin. Northern Lebanon’s #2 Lunk Funck beat #18 Xavier Molnar (8-5) at 195 pounds before #3 Tyler Cook gave Brookville a big boost with a (22-7) tech fall over #18 Hunter Wallace. The Raiders picked up a major at 120, where #4 Gavin Park beat #20 Colin Leonard (18-6).
