Weight Changes Highlight Week 10 State Rankings
The Individual Post-Season has arrived for majority of schools and with that comes shifting of weights. Several of the Keystone State’s biggest names are on the move and are reflected in the Week 10 Rankings.
Probably the most notable change came when Exeter Township senior Austin DeSanto made the move from 132 lbs. down to 126 lbs. for the post-season where he hopes to take on the Nation’s best wrestler, Spencer Lee. The move is an interesting one as DeSanto was ranked #1 in the State at 132 lbs. the entire season having been undefeated and going (92-1) over the last two seasons. DeSanto was a PIAA State Runner-up last season to 3x undefeated State Champion Spencer Lee falling to ‘The Kid’ by tech-fall in the finals at 120 lbs.
One of the Nation’s top juniors, Sammy Sasso (Nazareth Area), has already won PIAA State Gold when he and the Nazareth Blue Eagles won the Class AAA State Dual Team Championship. The 2x PIAA State Medalist has never finished lower than third in the State Tournament and will drop from 145 lbs. to 138 lbs. for the individual post-season. Sasso is undefeated on the season winning Championships at the Ironman and Beast of The East. Sasso was ranked #1 in the State at 145 lbs. and moves into the #1 spot at 138 lbs.
PIAA State Champion Cole Nye (Bishop McDevitt) spent his senior season down a weight at 195 lbs. after winning the State Championship at 220 lbs. in 2016. The Michigan State recruit was ranked #2 in the State majority of the season behind fellow PIAA State Champion Gavin Hoffman (Montoursville Area) who downed Nye in December at POWERade. Nye is moving up to 220 lbs. for the individual post-season where he falls into the #1 spot ahead of junior Josiah Jones (Bishop McCort) who he defeated in the PIAA State Finals a season ago.
