2x State Champion Cody Wiercioch Commits to Pitt
The University of Pittsburgh is showing that Penn State University is not the only destination for the top wrestlers from the Keystone State. Arguably the most highly anticipated and sought after recruits this season has just given a verbal commitment to Pittsburgh on Monday night. Cody Wiercioch has been one of the most impressive wrestlers of the past three years in all of PA with a 123-4 career record, two State Championships, one State Second Place, 2x PowerADE Champion including the Outstanding Wrestler Award his freshman season and one time PowerADE Second Place.
Cody went undefeated last season ending with a (46-0) record in his first season at Canon-McMillan. In his first two seasons Cody attended Charleroi Area High School and became the school’s first ever State Champion when he captured the State AA 152 lbs. title. What is even more impressive is that of his four career defeats, Cody had only ever lost to one wrestler in three years. That wrestler was Travis McKillop of Burrell; once as a freshman in the AA WPIAL Finals at 152 lbs., and three times his junior year at 160 lbs. during the PowerADE Finals, the SW Regional Finals, and the State AA Finals. Continuing his streak from last season, I do not foresee Cody losing another High School match. Cody joins an impressive class of recruits for Pittsburgh this year including State Champion Ryan Solomon and State runner-up Nick Zannetta. Overall Cody has claimed one Super 32 Championship and will look to earn his second this month.
