Class AA State Semifinals will feature entertaining, unexpected matches

106 lbs.

106 #4 Sheldon Seymour (Troy) vs. #1 Gary Steen (Reynolds)*
106 #2 Conner Redinger (Quaker Valley) vs. #6 Patrick DeMark (Trinity)

Sophomore Sheldon Seymour will give rookie Gary Steen all he can handle on the top half. Redinger has been a beast from his feet. Upson’s Pick: Steen vs. Redinger

113 lbs.

113 #1 Beau Bayless (Reynolds) vs. #6 Brock McMillen (Glendale)
113 #2 Wyatt Lutz (Montoursville) vs. #5 Josh Boozel (Mount Union)*

McMillen squeaked by Nate Smith in the quarters but faces a tall task against returning State Champion Beau Bayless. On the bottom half senior Josh Boosel will look to get back into the State finals and will face fellow senior Wyatt Lutz who won in OT in the quarters. Upson’s Pick: Bayless vs. Boozel

120 lbs.

120 #1 Jaret Lane (Southern Columbia) vs. #7 Zach Witmer (St. Joseph’s)*
120 #2 Isaac Crowell (Fort LeBoeuf) vs. #3 Chase Shields (Bishop McDevitt)

State Champion Jaret Lane is rolling in his final time at the State Tournament. He will face a very stout rookie Zach Witmer who has looked comfortable in his first trip to the Giant Center. On the bottom half #2 Isaac Crowell already earned his second career State Medal but will have to get through #3 Chase Shields in the semifinals. Shields is a junior who was already there last season. Upson’s pick: Lane vs. Shields

126 lbs.

126 #1 Gavin Teasdale (Jefferson-Morgan) vs. #6 AJ Burkhart (Athens)
126 #3 Tye Varndell (Cambridge Springs) vs. #2 Joshua Jones (Saucon Valley)*

Gavin Teasdale is looking to make history as he could become just the 13th ever wrestler to win four PIAA State titles. But first he needs to get past Athens’s stud AJ Burkhart in the semifinals. On the bottom half Varndell has looked laser focused on getting into the final and he faces #2 Josh Jones. Upson’s pick: Teasdale vs. Varndell

132 lbs.

132 #1 Cole Rhone (Benton) vs. #5 Ryan McGuire (Notre Dame – GP)
132 #2 Joseph Klock (Muncy)  vs. #11 Nathan Higley (Sullivan County)

#1 Cole Rhone is one match from making his second State Finals but State Medalist Ryan McGuire is not going away easily. On the bottom half #2 Joe Klock is on a mission, period. Upson’s pick: Rhone vs. Klock

138 lbs.

138 #1 Cole Matthews (Reynolds) vs. #4 Charlie Beatty (Marion Center)
138 #9 Matt Milbrand (Bloomsburg) vs. #2 Caleb Dowling (St. Joseph’s)

Cole Matthews, need anything else? Matt Milbrand is on fire but will face a very impressive sophomore #2 Caleb Dowling. Upson’s pick: Matthews vs. Dowling

145 lbs.

145 #1 Nathan Haubert (Palisades) vs. #14 Tyler Griffiths (Southmoreland)
145 #2 Kollin Myers (Boiling Springs) vs. #3 Caleb Hetrick (Brookville)*

Yikes. 145 lbs. in nuts. The top half will feature a returning State Finalist and the #1 ranked wrestler. Tyler Griffiths looks like he did a year ago. Haubert continues to win. Kollin Myers is dangerous and looks poised to return to the State finals where he was two years ago. Caleb Hetrick is a gamer. Upson’s pick: Haubert vs. Myers

152 lbs.

152 #1 Justin McCoy (Chestnut Ridge) vs. #10 Corey Christie (Burrell)
152 #2 Thayne Lawrence (Frazier) vs. #11 Andrew Todaro (Mount Union)

Justin McCoy does what Justin McCoy does. So consistent. Corey Christie will have his hands full, again. #2 Thayne Laurence has impressed me – he will need it against Mount Union senior Andrew Todaro who has been riding a wave of momentum. Upson’s pick: McCoy vs. Lawrence

160 lbs.

160 #1 Caleb Clymer (NW Lehigh) vs. #5 Derek Yingling (West Branch)
160 #6 Jacob Kallenborn (Port Allegany) vs. #2 Jared McGill (Chestnut Ridge)

How many Clymer’s are there? I don’t know but they are tough. Yingling is not only a good Pennsylvania beer but also the name of a good wrestler from West Branch. On the bottom half Jared McGill is rolling and I don’t see the train stopping. Upson’s pick: Clymer vs. McGill

170 lbs.

170 #1 Edmond Ruth (Susquehanna Twp) vs. #6 Derek Brown (Penn Cambria)
170 #3 Dalton Group (Susquenita) vs. #2 Robert Patrick (Ligonier Valley)*

Edmond Ruth may be the strongest wrestler here. He gets on a leg and doesn’t let go. One of, if not the best, semifinal match will be between Dalton Group and Robert Patrick. Both were State Finalists last season. Upson’s pick: Ruth vs. Patrick

182 lbs.

182 #1 Cody Mulligan (Saegertown) vs. #6 Matt Lewandowski (Mahanoy)
182 #2 Julian Gorring (Fort LeBoeuf) vs. #3 Gaige Garcia (Southern Columbia)*

Cody Mulligan is looking for his second State title at 182 lbs. but all the hype is on the bottom half where #2 Julian Gorring takes on Gaige Garcia. This is a major match-up. Upson’s pick: Mulligan vs. Gorring

195 lbs.

195 #1 Gavin Hoffman (Montoursville) vs. #11 Bryson Miller (Freedom Area)
195 #7 Chase Dull (Bermudian Springs) vs. #3 Brendan Calvin (Greenville)

Gavin Hoffman has been on the mat for 1:39. On the bottom half Chase Dull will face a tough #3 Brendan Calvin. Upson’s pick: Hoffman vs. Calvin

220 lbs.

220 #1 Anthony Walters (Bishop McCort) vs. #9 Jake Ryan (Mount Union)
220 #2 Dominic DeLuca (Derry Area) vs. #4 Jacob McMaster (Greenville)*

Jake Ryan has been one of the most impressive wrestlers in Class AA to me. He faces a 2-time State runner-up in Anthony Walters who is on par to make is third straight finals appearance. DeLuca has looked better in Hershey but will face an undefeated Jacob McMaster in a battle of two 2017 PIAA State Medalists. Upson’s pick: Walters vs. McMaster

285 lbs.

285 #1 Danny Scheib (Tri-Valley) vs. #3 Josiah Jones (Bishop McCort)*
285 #6 Steve McClure (Curwensville) #2 Bishop McCoy (South Side Beaver)

This at one time was a #1 vs. #2 in the State as Danny Scheib will look to deny Josiah Jones a third straight finals appearance. This is a big one. On the bottom half Bishop McCoy will take on a Curwensville senior who is in his first State Tournament. Upson’s pick: Scheib vs. McCoy
