Heavyweight Michael Wolfgram turns the table on Gerald Brown in the Class AAA Quarterfinals
HERSHEY: Central York junior Michael Wolfgram enjoys having fun and scoring points – he says it makes the sport more entertaining. This, coming from a heavyweight. Wolfgram had a lot fun in the quarterfinals where he won by major decision (13-2) over the No. 2 ranked wrestler in the State by PA Power Wrestling.
Last season West Mifflin’s Gerald Brown knocked Wolfgram out of medal contention in the consolation round (5-2). It was the last match Wolfgram has lost since official competition began this season.
“It’s really tough coming back from a quarterfinal loss like that” stated Wolfgram referring to last season’s defeat.
In the first period Wolfgram went up (2-0) on a takedown before turning it up in the second period. He took bottom and quickly hit a switch for a reversal before registering another two takedowns. Wolfgram planted Brown on his back on the last takedown, tacking on another three near fall points to end the second period with an (11-2) advantage.
The heavyweight, who is undefeated (38-0) on the season, added on a final takedown to turn the tables on #2 Gerald Brown winning by major decision (13-2). That was quite a turnaround from a year ago.
“My confidence is the same as it was coming in here. If you want to win the State Tournament you got to feel like you’re the best; every top guy in here is thinking that.”
Wolfgram will take on fellow junior #3 Kawaun DeBoe (Cathedral Prep) in the semifinals for a chance to compete on the big stage Saturday night.
