In Chattanooga, Tennessee former Pennsylvania wrestlers competed in the prestigious Southern Scuffle with four (4) Keystone State grapplers earning Championship Titles. Past NCAA Champions Jordan Oliver, Ed Ruth and Quinton Wright all earned titles in addition to 2012 NCAA runner-up Nico Megaludis.

Sophomore Nico Megaludis (Franklin Regional) of Penn State won the 125 lbs. Championship over PA Native Matt Snyder (Lewistown) of Virginia with an (8-4) decision in the finals. At 133 lbs. true freshman Jimmy Gulibon (Derry Area) of Penn State had an impressive tournament finishing in fourth place. Gulibon, who won four (4) PIAA State Championships , defeated Nationally ranked wrestler George DiCamillo by major decision (13-5). At 141 lbs. Penn State senior Bryan Pearsall (Warwick) finished in eighth place for the Nittany Lions.

Former 3x PIAA State Champion Jordan Oliver (Easton Area) has been dominating the competition at 149 lbs. this season  a year after falling in the NCAA finals at 133 lbs. As a sophomore Oliver won the 133 lbs. NCAA Division I title for Oklahoma State and will be looking for his second Championship in 2013. At the Southern Scuffle Oliver’s closest match was a (12-6) decision over James English as the senior recorded one fall, two tech-falls, and a major decision in the finals. Penn State’s James English (Central York) went on to finish in third place after falling to Oliver. English was granted a sixth year of eligibility last month after spending two seasons sidelined by injures. Also placing at 149 lbs. was Penn State’s Luke Frey (Montoursville Area) who finished in seventh place. At 157 lbs. Penn State redshirt junior James Vollrath (Council Rock South) upset #1 seed Alex Dieringer of Oklahoma State (Ranked #8 in the Nation at 157 lbs. by Intermat) to advance to the finals. There Vollrath lost (3-1) in sudden victory to Virginia’s Jedd Moore (Ranked #16 in the Nation at 157 lbs. by Intermat). Also placing at 157 lbs. was Navy’s Bobby Burg (Mercersburg Academy) who finished in seventh place.

Competing at 174 lbs. Virginia’s Jon Fausey (Line Mountain) turned out a solid performance to place in fourth place while former 3x PIAA State Champion and Cornell’s sophomore Marshall Peppelman (Central Dauphin) finished in eighth place. In a battle of 2012 NCAA Division I National Champions Penn State’s Ed Ruth (Susquehanna Township) faced off with Cornell’s Steve Bosak (State College Area) at 184 lbs. Bosak was the 2012 NCAA Champion at 184 lbs. last season while Ruth was a 2012 NCAA Champion at 174 lbs. Despite wrestling up a weight class from last season Ruth has continued his dominance at 184 lbs. Ruth topped Bosak with a (7-3) decision in a battle of two of PA’s top wrestlers. At 197 lbs. Penn State senior Quinton Wright (Bald Eagle Area), a 2011 NCAA National Champion, was able to earn a fall over Arizona State’s Jake Meredith (Ranked #8 in the Nation at 197 lbs. by Intermat) for the Championship title.
