Class 3A South Central Regional Matches To Watch from Hershey

106 pounds

#6 Aiden Lewis (Cedar Cliff) vs. #9 Mason Leiphart (Dover)

Lewis and Leiphart haven’t met this season, but they do share three common opponents. Both have shined in outings against Canon McMillan’s Jacob Houpt, Shippensburg’s Tristyn Keefer, and Manheim Central’s Uriah Warner, scoring bonus point in each bout. Still, Lewis might have a slight advantage as a state qualifier a year ago against Leiphart, a freshman who is making his first appearance under the bright lights of District 3 Championship competition.

120 pounds

#5 Cole Wilson (Northeastern) vs. #7 Will Betancourt (Manheim Central)

Betancourt had defeated Wilson twice the last two seasons, including a 2-0 score in last year’s District 3 Championship final. The two didn’t wrestle at states, but Wilson placed higher on the podium with a fourth-place finish to Betancourt’s seventh. The two wrestlers have combined for a 70-4 record this season and have been on a collision course since the District 3 Championship draw was released. Wilson-Betancourt III should be a good one.

170 pounds

#1 Edmond Ruth (Susquehanna Twp.) vs. #3 Luke Nichter (Chambersburg)

The most anticipated match in the 170-pound weight class took place last week with Ruth controlling the bout in a 7-3 decision. Now, Nichter gets a second opportunity, and he will have to control Ruth’s quickness on the outside and control the ties. Ruth is looking for his third straight state title — his first in Class 3A — and he will have to go through Nichter, a two-time state placer and runner-up a year ago, to keep the momentum rolling toward Hershey’s Giant Center in two weeks.

195 pounds

#4 Kyle Swartz (Northern York) vs. #5 Donovon Ball (Cedar Cliff)

Another re-match will take place in the highly anticipated 195 pound finals. These two appear to just flat out not like each other. They have wrestled twice this season with Swartz winning both meetings in tight matches. The last time was in the Section finals and included some controversy and lots of stoppages. Swartz is making his first appearance in the Regional Finals and qualified for his first State Tournament. Ball was a Regional runner-up in 2018 and placed fifth in the PIAA State Tournament.
