Team PA Crowns 5 Champions and Wins FloNationals

The 2013 FloNationals took place in Pennsylvania for the second straight season but unlike 2012, Team Pennsylvania walked away with the Team Championship over returning Champions California. Pennsylvania was led by capturing Championship titles in 5 of 14 weight-classes in addition to a grand total of 35 place winners.

2013 PIAA Class AA State Champion George “Micky” Phillippi earned a name for himself on the State Wrestling Scene after capturing his first PIAA State Championship in his freshman season for Derry Area. Competing in the FloNationals Phillippi won three straight before he fell (5-3) to the #1 seed Nick Piccininni, a two time New York State Champion. Phillippi dropped down to the consolation round where after two straight matches he faced 3x PIAA Class AAA State Medalist Jake Gromacki (Erie Cathedral Prep). Gromacki placed a career high fourth this season at 113 lbs. and defeated Phillippi by fall in (3:35). Gromacki would go on to take fourth place while took sixth place. Also placing for Team PA was junior and 2x PIAA Class AA State Medalist Justin Patrick of Ligonier Valley. Patrick placed in eighth falling twice to the same wrestler in Kyle Atkins of Illinois.

In arguably the best match-up of the entire 2013 FloNationals two PIAA State Champions clashed at 120 lbs. Senior 2x PIAA Class AA State Champion Darian Cruz (Bethlehem Catholic) took on sophomore and 2013 PIAA Class AAA State Champion Sam Krivus (Hempfield Area). Cruz has been busy in the month since the State Tournament, competing in the Dapper Dan Classic for Team PA at 120 lbs. The last time these two met was in December 2012 at the Beast of the East Tournament. That match was for third place at 120 lbs. with Cruz coming out victorious in a tight match (3-2 TB). After finishing in fourth place a season ago at FloNationals Krivus turned the tables on Cruz winning (2-1 TB) and capturing his first FloNationals Championship.
