Record # of PA Wrestlers Compete at NWCA All-Star Classic

Screen Shot 2013-11-05 at 12.46.52 AMThe 2013 NWCA All-Star Classic was filled with PA talent and excitement. Despite learning he would replace a sick Derek St. John at 157 lbs. just days before the event, Lehigh’s senior Joey Napoli (Cumberland Valley) was able to defeat Nestor Taffur of Boston University (2-1).

Three former Pennsylvania wrestling stars earned hard fought victories in the Main Event. Lehigh sophomore Mason Beckman (Reynolds) defeated Edinboro’s returning NCAA All-American and fellow Pennslyvania wrestler A.J. Schoop (Tyrone Area) in a decisive (5-1) decision. Beckman’s victory was followed up by teammate Joey Napoli’s victory at 157 lbs. The third PA wrestler to earn a victory was Maryland’s tough grappler Jimmy Sheptock (Northampton Area) who defeated Boise State’s Jake Swartz (3-1 in OT).

Overall, a record six (6) former Pennsylvania wrestlers competed in the NWCA All-Star Classic. Five in the “Main Event” and one, West Chester’s Luke Bilyeu, competed in the “Showcase” preliminary event. Bilyeu is a former Haverford High School wrestler who competes for West Chester’s club wrestling team.

In 2009 five (5) former Pennslyvania wrestlers competed in the NWCA All-Star Classic; Steve Bell (Maryland – Connellsville Area), Alex Krom (Maryland – Easton Area), Matt Moley (Bloomsburg – Spring-Ford), Andy Rendos (Bucknell – Brockway), and Chris Henrich (Virginia – Germantown Academy).
