Bryce Busler defeats NCAA Champion Kendric Maple

Former PIAA State Runner-up Bryce Busler sent shockwaves through the Wrestling Community when he defeated NCAA National Champion Kendric Maple of Oklahoma in the Brockport/Oklahoma Invitational finals at 149 lbs.

Busler is a senior at Bloomsburg University who was a 2012 NCAA Tournament Qualifier. He advanced to the finals at 149 lbs. and took on the #1 rated wrestler in the Nation, Kendric Maple. Last season at 141 lbs. Maple went (31-0) en route to capturing the first NCAA National Championship in eight years for the Oklahoma Sooners. This season Maple made the jump to 149 lbs. and recently took on 2x NCAA Champion Logan Steiber (Ohio State) at the NWCA All-Star Classic. Steiber bumped up to take on Maple and the two put on a show with Steiber coming out on top.

“Busler, wrestling at 149 pounds, opened the day with back-to-back wins by technical fall. The first came again Connor Melde of Army, 16-0; followed by a 16-1 victory over John Crast of Brockport. In the semi-finals Busler beat Dryden Dennis of Oklahoma by major decision, 9-0. In the championship bout Busler faced off with Kendric Maple of Oklahoma, the defending national champion and current number one wrestler at his weight. Busler fell behind 3-1 in the second period, then benefitted from two stalling points on Maple to force the overtime. In the OT Busler, ranked 17th in one poll, wasted little time in being the aggressor and scored a takedown with about 30 seconds left to score the upset victory.”

For his accomplishment Busler was named the Tournaments “Outstanding Wrestler.”
