State Tournament Predictions

State AAA Predictions and Analysis

Here are the State AAA Brackets

106 LBS

Overall this is a weight dominated by the WPIAL. Ethan Lizak is a returning State runner-up, finishing behind  Billy Rappo, where he lost 3-2 in ride out. Lizak has one loss this season which came to 2012 State Champion Brent Fleetwood from Smyrna, Delaware at the Escape The Rock Tournament. Lizak will have a difficult road to reach the finals, facing stiff competition in each round beginning with Dan Martoccio and most likely talented freshman Vincenzio Joseph in the second round.  Lizak then has the possibility of facing returning State Medalists, Jake Gromacki, Dom Forys and Zach Fuentes, all of who are on the bottom half of the bracket. In the top half, I expect undefeated freshman Mike Kemerer and Scott Parker to meet in the semi-finals, both advancing with relative ease.

Returning State Champion Billy Rappo will look to follow his older brother Mike Rappo and become a 2x State Champion. Rappo will have no easy road in doing so as I expect him to meet Canon McMillan’s Dalton Macri in the semi-finals, which will most likely be a high scoring bout. In the bottom half I expect freshman Sam Krivus to advance to the finals with a win over Matt Grossmann in the semis. Outside of the top three Rappo, Krivus and Macri, I can’t see anyone else taking the Championship but the remaining 5 medals are up for grabs.

Conner Schram has finished 1st and 2nd in his last two trips to Hershey, winning the 103 LBS title as a freshman in 2010, and after falling to Jordan Conaway in the finals at 112 LBS last season, the Big Mac junior is poised to win his 2nd PIAA Gold this season. Despite missing part of the season with a minor back injury, Schram has tore through the competition thus far and is the favorite in this years Tournament. His competition will be PowerADE Champion and Pittsburgh City League Star Godwin Nyama, who is a terror from neutral. Schram’s overall experience and stature may prove to be the determining factor if the two meet  in the finals as I predict. Schram will most likely face either Courtlandt Schuyler or Grimaldi Gonzalez in the semi-finals, both are aggressive and physical wrestlers who should match up well against Schram. Nyama will have to wrestle his best in order to reach the finals as 3x State Medal winner Corey McQuiston is on the same side of the bracket.

Returning State Champion Corey Keener leads the way in a 126 LBS field that is loaded with talent. Arguably one of the deepest weights this season I expect each match from the opening round to the finals to be close bouts. I have Keener meeting freshman Patrick Duggan in the semi-finals with Keener advancing to the finals for the 3rd straight season. In the bottom half I have Tyson Dippery meeting Josh DiSanto in the semis with Dippery advancing to the finals against Keener. I expect several surprises at this weight with wrestlers such as Dustin Rook, TJ Brandt, CJ Palmer, and Michael Dahlstrom all capable of making noise.

One of the more wide-open weight classes this season, several different wrestlers have the opportunity to claim PIAA Gold this weekend. Returning State runner-up Mackenzie McGuire has a real shot of making the finals again, but will be tested I expect by John Dutrow in the semi-finals. In the upper-half Shyheim Brown, a vetren of the PIAA Championships should advance to the semi-finals without much trouble and will most likely face the winner of the Devon Lotito vs. Shields/Galasso match. Any of those four (Brown, Lotito, Shields or Galasso) could ultimately reach the finals. Overall this weight will be an exciting one to watch unfold.

Wow, did the top half of this bracket get the shaft or what? Three nationally ranked wrestlers are all on the top half of this bracket with State Champion Steve Spearman and third place finishers Matt Cimato and Solomon Chishko. I fully expect the State Champion at 138 LBS to be the one who survives the top half of this brutal bracket. On the bottom half, there are about 5 wrestlers who could make a run for the finals, but I expect Tanner Wiltrout to face Jason Stephen in the semi-finals with Stephen advancing to the finals.

Returning State Champion Mitch Minotti is the clear favorite at this weight and should advance to the finals, possibly facing either Heath Coles or TC Warner in the semi-finals. Both District 7 and District 1 have deep talent at this weight and I expect both Districts to be well represented on the podium. I expect Garett Hammond to return to the finals this year to face Minotti, but don’t count out Octorara’s Bradon Arnsberger. This is yet another weight with close competition all the way from open round matches to the finals.

Another weight that is fairly wide-open in the sense I think any of the top 3 guys here can win it. Garrett Peppelman is 2-1 against Rustin Barrick this season and he is 1-1 against Casey Kent. I like Peppelman over Kent in the semis of the top half, and Barrick over Sheptock in the bottom half semis. If I am correct this will be G. Peppelman vs. Rustin Barrick Part IV. G. Pep has won the last two and I predict he wins this one. Cole Sheptock from Northampton has been wrestling at a high level and I would not be surprised to see him challenge Barrick for a spot in the finals.

The weight everyone is talking about. Returning State Champions Brian Brill and Chance Marsteller both undefeated this season. I am confident both will reach the finals will relative ease to set up the highly anticipated show-down. Outside of these two, the contenders include Zach Zavatsky, Brent Harner, and Mike Shermot. Picking 4th-8th is difficult with wrestlers not having many if at all common opponents. The NE Region is rather weak at this weight and I would be surprised if more than one wrestler got on the medal stand. Watch out for Cody Brunst and Jake Wisener in the wrestle backs.

The big name here is Cody Wiercioch from Canon McMillan who as a freshman won the State AA Title at 152 LBS and was a runner-up last season at 160 LBS AA for Charleroi. This season he is undefeated and the clear favorite to win. Possibly the most dangerous headlock/pinner in PA is Shane Springer from Norristown who himself if a State runner-up. The top half of the bracket is heavy with talent and I expect Wiercioch to advance to the finals. Jacob Taylor from Bald Eagle Area and Connor Moran from Solanco are two threats and should find themselves on the podium.

Top Eight Predictions:

1. Cody Wiercioch-Canon McMillan

In my opinion this should be one of the more competitive and exciting weight classes to watch this weekend. Several high quality wrestlers here who will be competing for the title and even more going after medals. The top 3 in this weight are Matt McCutcheon, Jarred Lux, and Khlique Harris. Harris and Lux have split wins this year and McCutcheon recently beat Lux in overtime at the Regional finals. McCutcheon, a junior, has the most experience here at Hershey, making it to States each year and coming away with a medal last season. The depth of 182 LBS is impressive with the second level of guys all capable of upsetting the top three. Ryan Burnheimer already has a PIAA medal, Josh Thomson is tough to beat, and Travis Moyer is up a weight but like Burheimer has won PIAA hardware previously. District 1 sends a strong group of wrestlers with undefeated Chris Jastrzebski winning the Southeast Regional and leading the way. Overall earning a medal at this weight will be no easy task for a group of experienced wrestlers.

Undefeated Perry Hills from Pittsburgh Central Catholic has a tough road ahead of him but I predict he will make it to the finals and win it all. His toughest test may be junior PJ Steinmetz from Council Rock South in the semi-finals. This weight is tough to predict with very limited common opponents and head-to-head bouts such as Montour’s Cole Macek and Upper Dublin’s Devon Dhoble having relatively no challenges during the regular season. I think Landon Hanna advance to the finals from the bottom half to meet Hills but Jake Hart from Hampton is capable of advancing as well. Another weight with depth, placing at 195 LBS will require a strong tournament.

Undefeated sophomore returning State Champion Thomas Haines will be looking to earn his second title in as many tries. I expect Haines to meet Ben Balish in the semi-finals and advance to the finals in the bottom half. There are quite a few candidates who could make it to the finals from the top half of the bracket and I have Tyson Searer vs. Alex Campbell in the semi-finals with Searer advancing to meet Haines. However, Aaron Bradley, Mike Boykin and Bryton Barr could all easily end up in the finals. Each Region has a balanced group of wrestlers at 220 LBS and I expect each Region to place at least one.

Returning State Champion Averee Robinson will need to wrestle the best of his career in order to repeat after falling to Dawson Peck in the Regional finals. Robinson is now on the bottom half of the bracket with undefeated Brad Emerick of Coughlin and UNC recruit Cody Klempay of Canon McMillan. In the top half I expect a Peck vs. Duplin semi-final with Peck advancing to the finals. In the lower half I see Robinson vs. Klempay with Klempay advancing to take on Peck. Despite being banged up Peck has impressed me in his short season and I predict him to come out the State Champion. The top tier wrestlers at this weight should all medal, and several up and comers such as Paul Johnson from St. Jospeh Prep and Shaun Kuhn from Kiski Area have the opportunity to make a splash.
